● Have you ever taken something apart? If so, why?

Yes, I have taken things about it. Normally I take things apart to fix them.
● What can you learn from taking things apart?
You can learn how something is assembled and how it works.
● What does the video game controller look like?
The controller is colored, in this case, orange and a blue-like color, it has no rough
edges, has an M-like shape, and is designed to fit comfortably in someone's hand.
● What are some interesting visual features of the video game controller?
I think the color combination is very unique for this controller and the controller seems to
get gradually thicker until it reaches the triggers in the back.
● Game Controller Description:
A game controller is designed in an M-like figure, is made to fit comfortably in
someone's hands, has multiple inputs and output systems, and has multiple color
options.

● What are all of the different inputs to the game controller (for example, the player
presses the blue button)?

For this game, it seems as though the arrow keys on the left of the controller move the
player, the X button is jump, the right trigger, R2, is used as some sort of attack, and the
square was some form of a speed boost.

● What are some video game outputs (for example, the game character jumps
on-screen, the controller vibrates)?
Whenever the character was attacked/lost life, he would fall off his skateboard.

● What are the intended functions of the game controller (for example, provide
power)?

The game controller for this game is simply to move the character, while avoiding
enemies, and deliver the pizza, hence the name “Pizza Delivery.”

● How many parts do you think are required to make the controller?

I can’t give a super accurate answer, but there are probably around 50. There are a lot
of small pieces I feel like going into a controller design, but for actual parts, probably not
that many because of the size of the controller.

● Label a second index card with three columns headed “Inputs,” “Function,”
“Outputs.” Record your observations from watching the video in the appropriate
column on the card. In the “Functions” column, also record your hypotheses
regarding how the game controller inputs result in the outputs observed within
the game based on the observable components. In other words, how might
components hide from view turn inputs into outputs?

● What parts interact to execute the function?

All the inputs and outputs come to gather to allow us to achieve the function.
● How do the parts interact (push, pull, and twist) with each other?
If you push a button, an input, your character will do something, and output.
● What materials are the parts composed of? Why that material?
Plastic; plastic is relatively cheap for mass production, still rather durable, and is easy to
obtain.
● Disassembly:
A controller is rather simple. The controller is assembled so that it can perform all the
inputs needed in order to complete the function of the game. Furthermore, you push a
button, it does an output, and those outputs are to help you complete the function of the
game you are playing.
● Reflection Question: What data is important to collect during the reverse
engineering process?

I think it is very important to collect data on the parts actually assembled and how they
work together to form inputs. outputs, and functions.

Conclusion
1. What motivation(s) do engineers have to perform reverse engineering on
products?

Reverse engineering is used so you can break down an object and analyze it in
further detail.
2. Taking things apart is a valuable way to learn how something works.
Biological dissection has been used to learn about the human body, while
mechanical dissection has been used to learn about engineered systems.
Think of or research a specific example of how dissection has been used in
both medicine and engineering to advance learning and understanding.

For mechanical dissection, I think the car engine is a very big piece that can
benefit from reverse engineering.

For medicine, it allows scientists to understand what the medicine is actually

composed of.
