QUESTION ONE COMPULSORY (25 marks)
1a) Freddie and Beauty divided $500 trillion. If Freddie had received $70 trillion more and Beauty
had spent $30 trillion of her money they would have equal amounts. How much did each receive?
(5 marks)
1b) An HP laptop is sold for 1 400 USD. The gross profit is computed as three quarters of the cost.
Assume that the selling price is equal to the gross profit added to the cost. Determine the cost and
the gross profit. (5 marks)

stand is increased by 10% and the width is decreased by 4%. What is the percentage change in the area?

payoff for carrying an umbrella and no rain is (- 2) and the payoff of carrying an umbrella and rain
is(+20). On the other hand, the payoff of no rain and no rain is (+5) and umbrella and rain is (- 40)
Assuming the above arbitrary payoff values.
(i) What would you advise the commuter to do? (5 marks)
(ii) Draw a decision tree diagram for the above scenario. (5 marks)
2a) A flask is two thirds full of water. Two-fifths of the water is emptied out and 40 cm3 remains in the
Flask. What is the total capacity of the flask? (5 marks)
2c) There are two investment options available to Tinotenda. The first option is to invest 1000 USD at
10% simple interest per annum for the next 5 years. The second option is to invest the same amount at
5% interest for the same period of time. Which of the two is a better option on maturity (after five
years)? (5 marks)
1
2d) Factorise completely the following expressions:
3b) Explain the main difference in the revenue functions of a firm under perfect competition and one
under pure monopoly and the underlying assumptions. Also demonstrate your answer graphically.
(5 marks)
3d) A number is first decreased by 8% and then increased by 10%. If it now equals 486, what is its original
value? (5 marks)
4a) Suppose for a monopolist the demand equation for his product is P = 400 – 2Q and the average total
cost (ATC) = 0.2Q + 4 + (400/Q), where Q is the number of units and P is the price being charged in
USD. Determine the following:
(i) the level of output at which profit is maximised (3 marks)
(ii) the price at which this occurs (2 marks)
(iii) If, as a regulatory device, the government imposes a tax of 22USD per unit on the
monopolist, what is the new price for profit maximisation. (5 marks)
/3
4b) Simplify: 121 x 961/4 (
no calculators) (5 marks)
2161/4
4c) Tino, Tashy and Otty formed a partnership with a total capital of 320 000 USD. They contributed to
this in the ratio 7: 5: 4. After 3 months, Tino withdrew 40 000 USD and after six months Tashy
withdrew half of his share of the capital. In what ratio should the first year’s profit be divided among
them? (5 marks)

measure of the high transport costs. From Westgate (WG) to Greencroft (GC) its 4 km and from GC
to UZ its 10km. He cycles at an average of speed of 6km/hr from WG to GC but his average speed
from WG to UZ is 12km/hr. What is his average speed between GC and UZ? (5 marks)
2
5c) For BMC Manufacturing Co, the total costs are $1200, material and labour costs combined are $2 per
Unit and the demand equation is P = 100/√Q. What the maximum level of profit? (5 marks)
5d) Use the Simplex method to solve the following Linear Programming problem.
Maximise P = 4X + 6Y
Constraints 2X + Y ≤ 180
X + 2Y ≤ 160
X + Y ≤ 100
X ;Y ≥ 0
