Grain Size Analysis " Sieve Analysis "

A sieve analysis involves shaking a granular material like soil through a series of sieves to determine the particle size distribution. The material is weighed after passing through each sieve to calculate the percentage retained and passing. This provides important information about how the material will perform based on the sizes of its constituent particles. Standard sieving equipment and procedures outlined in documents like ASTM and BS standards are used to ensure consistent testing. Charts and calculations are made to analyze the results and characterize the soil sample.

GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS

"SIEVE ANALYSIS"

INTRODUCTION:

A sieve analysis is a practice or procedure used (commonly used in civil engineering)

to assess the particle size distribution of a granular material

The size distribution is often of critical importance to the way the material performs
in use.

A sieve analysis can be performed on any type of non-organic or organic granular

materials including sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, feldspars, coal, soil, a wide
range of manufactured powders, grain and seeds, down to a minimum size
depending on the exact method.

Being such a simple technique of particle sizing, it is probably the most common.

Purpose:
It set included soil particles so fine sand size, and is testing a way that dry sieving.

So that the soil sample is passed through a standard set of sieves and then weighed
the remaining quantities to each sieve.

Standerds:
B.S 882

ASTM C-136

ASTM E-11 for the general specification of sieves.

Objectives:
 To determine the grading or size distribution of the aggregates using the sieve
analysis.
 To determine the fineness modulus.
 To draw grading curve of pile of aggregate.

Divices used:
Set of sieves, Balance, Soil specimen, Sieve shaker and cleaning Bruch.

Test procedure:
1. Take a sample of the former soil drying oven.
2. We put all the standard sieves vibrator mechanic and the other is
placed solid vase.
3. We create a sample first sieve and then in the process of shaking the
standard sieves top roll sample sieves movement is regular and the
lowest a time (10 min).
4. After shaking estimated passing each sieve ratio must be reserved on
the amount shall not exceed for each sieve (200 gm) after completion
of the analysis sieve
5. Recorded weights to each successive reserved sieve.
6. Calculate the percentage of reserved on each sieve by diving weight
following the reserved weight dry total.
7. Calculate the percentage (%) of passing from each sieve.
Data Analysis:
Through the following table of data we will calculate percent passing
and the percent remaining for the extraction of both rate of gravel and
sand and clay and then determine the quality of the soil.

For example: total mass =1593g

Mass retained on sieve NO.4 =235g
Quantity Passing =total mass – mass retained = 1593 – 235 = 1358g
The percent retained = (mass ret./total mass)*100 =(235/1593)*100
=14.75%
From this % passing =100-14.75 =85.25%
