Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:


As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on
any part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking
your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are

Let Us Learn

Before we start, I would like to know how far you know about the
Types of Drugs. Specifically, it seeks to achieve the learning competency
Identifies the types of drugs/substances of abuse (H9S-IIc-18) and
Analyzes situations for the use and non-use of psychoactive
substances (H9S-IIb-17).
And we will focus our learning objectives with the following:
1. identify the types of drugs/ substances in abuse; and

2. analyzes situations for the use and non-use of psychoactive substances.

Types of Drugs
Drug – is a chemical substance that causes change in the

physiological and psychological state of a person. Wikipedia, 2020 added,

that is also called medication or medicine use to treat, cure, prevent, or

diagnose a disease or to promote well-being.

Six Types of Drugs (or abused drugs)

1. Gateaway drugs – These are cigarettes and alcohol which are legal drugs

that non-user may try. A user of this drug can lead to more dangerous

drug such as marijuana and shabu. Moreover, engagement of smoking and

drinking in an earlier stage may have a higher chance of using and

experimenting with dangerous drugs of abuse.

2. Depressants drugs – are drugs that can slow down the Central Nervous

System (CNS) of a person. It includes brain, spinal cord, and nerves. These

drugs relax the muscle and nerves. The reasons why Doctors commonly

prescribed to help a person to be less angry, less stressed, or tensed. In

addition, these will make patients feel sleepy and light headed. Other

depressant drugs are alcohol, barbiturates, and tranquilizers.

3. Stimulants drugs – drugs that speed up person’s Central Nervous

Systems (CNS). It is the opposite of depressant drugs, which make a

person’s energy high. Depression and tiredness are its negative effects.

Other stimulant drugs are amphetamines which include shabu, caffeine,

nicotine, and cocaine.

4. Narcotics – drugs which relieve pain and induce sleepiness.

These drugs are given in moderation to patients with mental disorders

and person with severe pain like cancer. Other narcotic drugs are

cocaine, heroin and marijuana. These drugs are forbidden by law and

dangerous when taken.

5. Hallucinogens – came from the word ‘hallucination’, means to perceive

illusions. It affects all senses and make the user sees, hears, and feels

things that don’t exist in the real time. These are drugs that falsify reality

and facts. Other hallucinogens include lysergic acid diethylamide,

psilocybin obtained from mushrooms and mescaline.

6. Inhalants – are found in ordinary household products and anesthetics.

Inhalant intoxication includes sniffing of chemical’s foul smell, inhaling

or gasping. Continuous use and abuse leads to delusions, brain and liver

damage, coma, and death. Examples of household products used as

inhalants are rugby or solvent, acetone, ordinary and spray paint,

cleaning fluids and air container fluid (Freon).
