Caution! Please consult the operation manual before using the in-
strument.
Failure to follow or carry out instructions preceded by this symbol may
result in personal injury or damage of the device and the installation.
♦ Use caution during installation and use of this product; high voltages
and currents may be present in circuit under test.
♦ Use the 1A/10A current connectors only, if the current path can be
opened during the measurements without danger for the operator, the
equipment under test and the instrument itself.
For any further information concerning the use of this instrument, or in the event of any questions,
the user is invited to contact EMH / MTE directly at:

ISOLATION VOLTAGE
500V MAX.
The voltage between all current connectors of one phase ([1], [2], [4], [5]) and the
current connectors of the other phases, the voltage connectors, all other connectors,
the case and protecting earth may not exceed 500 VAC.
Warning! When testing meters with closed voltage links, the current
paths are connected with the voltage paths. Dangerous line voltages
are present on the current paths in this case!
INPUTS ONLY
1000 V DC / 750 V AC MAX.
Attention! The voltage applied to the current circuits may not exceed 500 VAC.
3.2.4 Connecting a PC
The PTS 2.3 Portable Test System has an RS232 PC communication interface for remote control. In
this manner testing processes can, to a large extent, be run automatically.
The required interface of the PTS 2.3 is selected and configured via the system menu. The interface
connector of the PTS 2.3 should be connected to the PC serial interface. The commands available
are described in a separate document.
RS232 BD: 57600 Actual baud rate of the serial RS232 interface is 57600

4.1.3 Keypad
Alphanumeric keys for input of numerical values and text within the
menus.
During text input the characters shown in the lower part of the key can be
selected by repeated key pressure. In turn around mode small characters,
capital characters and numbers can be selected. The last selected charac-
ter or number will be inserted in the input field.
The sign below the zero symbolizes a space.
Current I1 is disabled
Current I1 remains switched off, independent of the
value under I and the operation of the START key
For input of data press the soft key next to the value or
parameter you require to change, e.g. current setting of a
load point.
The corresponding soft key will be highlighted.
Input the desired value using the keypad, e.g. 5.0. The old
value will be overwritten.
Accept the input by pressing any other soft key or function
key, e.g soft key for phase angle.
Note: In case of a mistake, repeat the whole input se-
quence by pressing the soft key again.
and
Warning! Special care must be taken, if meters are tested with closed voltage links. In
this case there is no galvanic separation between voltage and current circuits of the
meter under test. This means the line voltage is also present on the current connec-
tions between PTS 2.3 and meter under test.

The values for current I, phase angle ϕ and frequency f (only in NUM mode) can be changed as re-
quired:
• Either directly by the soft keys for I, ϕ, f by input of the desired values using the alphanumeri-
cal keypad (see chapter 4.2)
• Or by selecting a preset load point from a load point table (see chapter 5.2)
The settings are common for all three phases.
Whether the individual currents I1, I2, I3 are switched on, depends on the status of the current acti-
vation function keys I1, I2, I3 (see chapter 4.1.4).
In LINE mode (default mode) the soft key f has no function. He changes to fN and shows the meas-
ured frequency of the input voltage U(L3-N).
The selection or input of new values is only a setting-up process. The source will not automatically
switch to the new values. The source should be activated using the START and STOP function keys
(see chapter 4.3).
Switch-on the outputs of the source
A single load point is switched on in the measurement mode or circuit analy-
sis or if the load point 0.01 is selected in the meter testing mode.
An automatic test sequence is started in meter testing mode from the se-
lected load point of a table (1 … 9) and continues to the end of the load point
table.
For the meaning of the LED status of the START and STOP key see chapter 4.3.
Attention! Always carefully check the measuring set-up before the source is switched
on. Check that no current is fed back to the PTS 2.3 from any external circuits, if the
internal source is activated.
The actual selected load point is always shown in the right upper corner. The
0.01 number before the decimal point defines the load point table. The number after
the decimal point the actual selected load point within a table.
Either
Select the load point table with the horizontal cursor keys
Select the load point within the table with the vertical cursor keys
Or
Activate load point tables submenu
Select a load point table with the alphanumerical keypad, e.g. table 5
The first load point of table 5 is selected and the values of I, ϕ and selection of I1,
5.01 I2, I3 are preset as saved under this load point. The parameters for test mode
(imp, t, W) and number of repetitions (n) are also preset in the meter testing mode.
5.3 Alarms
In case of alarm the PTS 2.3 switches automatically off and displays
the reason for the alarm in a screen chart:
The star in line ”I-OL” and column ”I2” is indicating the switch-off
was caused by an “overdrive / external applied current“ - alarm of
the amplifier I2 (Phase L2).
Pressing the ”STOP” key causes the reset of alarms (=Return to the
program screen).
This function serves to allow different actual load values be switched on by the source or to check
the installation at customer site in the measurement operating mode and to show the real load val-
ues on site with the help of a vector diagram.
For connection examples see chapter 9.
6.1 Load values UIϕ
ϕ and power values PQS
Activate display of load values (default display after acti-
vation of measurement sub menu)
The left side of the display changes and the actual load values or power values are displayed.
The right side shows the actual source settings, if the mode test is active.
In the PQS mode the active power values for each phase
P1, P2, P3 in 4-wire mode and P1, P3 in 3-wire mode are
displayed, together with the sum values for active PΣ,
reactive QΣ and apparent SΣ power.
cosϕ and sinϕ are calculated based on the phase angles
between phase to neutral voltages and phase currents.
Under load conditions with sinus wave form in voltage and
current these values are identical to the active or reactive
power factor.
At the bottom the measured frequency of the input voltage
U(L3-N) is displayed.
Attention! In the test mode the results on the left side are
only displayed, if the source is active.

This input is necessary for the error measurement in the Imp and t test modes.
Enter the required value using the alphanumerical keypad or the vertical cursor
keys.
Test set-up
Before start of the test the meter under test (MUT) must be connected to the PTS 2.3 and a scan-
ning head or a hand switch must be connected to the impulse input.
Examples for measuring set-ups in different connection and operating modes can be found in chap-
ter 9 and 10.

Remark
The number of datasets can vary, if a register test is part of the test sequence. The number of tested
registers is defined during the test run by the number of entered initial and end readings. In this case
all three energy registers have been tested. For each register test an own dataset is saved. But reg-
ister datasets are always displayed on the same results page. The indication 3,4,5/5 indicates that
three datasets are displayed at the same time. If only one register would have been tested, the indi-
cation would be 3/3. If two registers would have been tested, the indication would be 3,4/4. With the
same test sequence the total number of datasets can be 3, 4 or 5.
Select storage mode print results by repeated key pressure (cyclical mode).
Select a storage position by direct numerical input or with the up and down cur-
sor keys. Only occupied positions can be printed.
With a short key pressure on the memory key the results of the selected storage
position are printed.
The printer symbol is displayed inverse as long as data is transferred to the
printer.
Printer (option)
Dot matrix printer: type DATAMEGA DNP-2335-40-V.24
• Portable alphanumeric printer: 40 characters per line, standard ASCII character set supported
• RS232 serial interface: 8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit, no control signals used (only RXD, TXD, GND
connected), baud rate: 9600 bd
Attention! If another printer model than the recommended shall be used, we strongly recommend to
test the printer before buying.
