result in personal injury or damage of the device and the installation.

General precautions for use

To prevent electric shock:

♦ This product has to be only used by qualified personnel practicing

applicable safety precautions.

♦ Use caution during installation and use of this product; high voltages
and currents may be present in circuit under test.

♦ Local safety regulations must be observed.

PTS 2.3 Operation Manual (Version 4) Page 3/77

Precautions for use of PTS 2.3 in measurement mode

♦ It is not recommended to use the PTS 2.3 direct current inputs to

measure in unprotected installations (on secondary side of non-
intrinsically safe current transformers, in installations without protec-
tion fuses).

♦ Do not use the 1A/10A current connectors, when measuring on secon-

dary side of current transformers.

Warning! Dangerous high voltages can occur and the cur-

rent transformer and the instrument can be damaged, if the
1A/10A current path is opened during measurements.

♦ Use high current connectors when measuring on secondary side of

current transformers.
Note: The current path between the black and blue high current connectors
is not fused and always closed.
Note: In measurement mode the high current connectors can be used for
the full specified current range. Currents <10A are measured with the same
accuracy as if measured with the 1A/10A current connectors.
Note: Adapter cables from high current connectors to 2.5mm2 laboratory
cables with 4mm safety connectors are available, if the high current cables
cannot be used together with existing test terminals.

♦ Use the 1A/10A current connectors only, if the current path can be
opened during the measurements without danger for the operator, the
equipment under test and the instrument itself.

Warning! The voltage across the 1A/10A current connectors

must not exceed 440 VAC in the case of a failure! The cor-
rect operation of the built-in relays and the protection fuses
(1.6AFF / 16AFF) is not guaranteed at fault voltages
>440VAC.

3.2 Installation of Test Circuitry
The incoming power supply line and the measuring circuit connections should be made before the
instrument is turned on.
If a measurement is to be carried out using a scanning head, this should be connected to the rele-
vant socket connector.
Connection examples using the PTS 2.3 for measurements on various types of devices under test,
and for different connection modes, are given in Chapter 9.
3.2.1 Paths of Current
There are two possible connections for each phase. For currents up to 10A the two 4mm safety
sockets are used. For higher currents up to 100A the two high current connectors are used.
Attention! Only one connection (1A/10A or 100A) for each phase may be connected at
a time and the connection used must be the same as the selected 10A or 100A in the
installation menu.
Starting from the black socket, the current path of a phase is routed through the device under test
back to the blue socket.
The current outputs are isolated from the voltage outputs and the supply voltage. Each phase is pro-
tected by two fuses, 1.6A for the 1A range and16A for the 10A range (both fuses are fast acting
types).
Attention! If the clamp-on current transformers are used, connect them first to the PTS
2.3 and then to the cables of the test circuitry to avoid open circuiting of the clamp-on
CT’s secondary windings.

3.2.2 Paths of Voltage

The voltage inputs L1, L2, L3, N are used for the direct connection of device under test to the
PTS 2.3 in the Test and Measurement mode. The voltage inputs are connected in star configura-
tion. In the Test mode the frequency and phase angle of the generated currents is synchronised to
the measuring voltage.
3.2.3 Special Circuits
For connecting devices under test, where current and voltage path are not separable (e.g. electricity
meters without voltage links) the corresponding current and voltage sockets of the PTS 2.3 can be
connected together.
Warning! In this case the current paths are at the voltage potentials. Dangerous high
voltages are present on the current paths.

Attention! The voltage applied to the current circuits may not exceed 500 VAC.

3.2.4 Connecting a PC
The PTS 2.3 Portable Test System has an RS232 PC communication interface for remote control. In
this manner testing processes can, to a large extent, be run automatically.
The required interface of the PTS 2.3 is selected and configured via the system menu. The interface
connector of the PTS 2.3 should be connected to the PC serial interface. The commands available
are described in a separate document.

PTS 2.3 Operation Manual (Version 4) Page 9/77

4. Operation of the PTS 2.3
The following section deals with manual operation of the PTS 2.3 portable test system. Operation of
the unit via serial interface commands is explained in a separate document.

Before operating carefully read the safety precautions in chapter 1.

4.1 Display and control elements

4.1.1 Display and soft keys
Standard display sections:
- Status indications on top with actual menu indicated on
top of the vertical line
- Soft key definitions on right and left edges of the dis-
play
- Results of measurements shown primarily on the left
side
- Source settings are normally shown on the right side
- Actual load point table and load point on upper right
corner (0.01)
Soft key fields left and right At the left and the right border there are always 5 identi-
cal fields displayed, defining the function of the corre-
sponding, so called soft keys at the left and right border
of the display. The 10 soft keys, 5 on each side, are
used to navigate to sub menus and to activate input of
data.
Left side of display This side is normally used to display the measured re-
sults of Meter testing, measurement and circuit analysis.
Right side of display With a few exceptions this side is reserved for the set-
ting of the built-in current source. The settings of current
I and phase angle between current and voltage ϕ can be
changed. If the last soft key shows fN (mode LINE), then
the measured frequency of the connected voltages is
displayed. If the soft key shows f (mode NUM), then the
frequency can be set independent of the frequency of
the voltage. This may be useful, if only the internal cur-
rent source is used.
Status indications Up to seven fields are displayed to indicate the actual
status of the unit.
Indication of selected load point In the upper right corner the actual selected load point
table (number before decimal point) and the selected
load point (number after decimal point) are shown.

4.3 Start / Stop
The operation of the internal source and the meter test functions are controlled with the two function
keys

and

Indication of LED’s of the function keys START and STOP

The indications of the LED’s of the START and STOP keys are very important, because they indi-
cate, whether the source outputs are active or inactive. In the interests of safety, the user is advised
to check both LEDs to confirm the actual status of the equipment.
Warning! Keep always in mind, that the PTS 2.3 is only a current source. The line volt-
ages in the installation are still there, even if the PTS 2.3 is completely switched-off.
Before you make any changes to the installation, particularly the parts subject to high
voltages, the source must be in the STANDBY mode (the LED of the STOP key is red)
and the line voltages in the installation should be switched off by operating a circuit
breaker or removing fuses, if available.
If the line voltages cannot be switched off, special safety precautions should be taken,
not to touch any parts on line voltage potential.

Warning! Special care must be taken, if meters are tested with closed voltage links. In
this case there is no galvanic separation between voltage and current circuits of the
meter under test. This means the line voltage is also present on the current connec-
tions between PTS 2.3 and meter under test.

Attention! This is an internal selection to define the display of the cur-
rent measurement and setting. Both connectors are always active. Only
one connector must be connected at a time. Care must be exercised to
ensure that the correct connectors are used for the range required.
That is, if the 10 A range is selected and a current of 10 A is set, but
connections are made to the 100 A connectors, then a current of 100 A
will flow.
Frequency mode
Frequency and phase angle of the currents are synchronized
LINE to the voltage between inputs L3 - N
In all menus with source settings on the right side, the soft key f is
changed to fN and the measured frequency of the voltage U(L3-N)
is displayed. The soft key has no function in this mode. Different
load conditions can be simulated for the meter under test by defin-
ing the current amplitude and the phase angle of the current in
relation to the input voltage U(L3-N). This mode is also known as
phantom load operation.

Frequency and generation of the currents is completely inde-

NUM pendent of the voltage inputs
In all menus with source settings on the right side, the soft key f is
used to set the frequency of the current completely independent in
the range: 40 … 400 Hz. In this mode the PTS 2.3 is a pure current
source.

5. Operation of the built-in source
5.1 Set-up of the source
If the source is activated, then the right side of the display
shows always the actual source settings of the selected
load point displayed at the top.
The basic settings are made in the installation sub menu
(see chapter 4.4):
• Enabling and disabling of the source,
• 2-, 3- or 4-wire connection mode
• 10A or 100A current output
• Frequency LINE mode with current synchronised to
voltage input with frequency fN or NUM mode with cur-
rent completely independent with frequency set with
soft key f.

The values for current I, phase angle ϕ and frequency f (only in NUM mode) can be changed as re-
quired:
• Either directly by the soft keys for I, ϕ, f by input of the desired values using the alphanumeri-
cal keypad (see chapter 4.2)
• Or by selecting a preset load point from a load point table (see chapter 5.2)
The settings are common for all three phases.
Whether the individual currents I1, I2, I3 are switched on, depends on the status of the current acti-
vation function keys I1, I2, I3 (see chapter 4.1.4).
In LINE mode (default mode) the soft key f has no function. He changes to fN and shows the meas-
ured frequency of the input voltage U(L3-N).
The selection or input of new values is only a setting-up process. The source will not automatically
switch to the new values. The source should be activated using the START and STOP function keys
(see chapter 4.3).
Switch-on the outputs of the source
A single load point is switched on in the measurement mode or circuit analy-
sis or if the load point 0.01 is selected in the meter testing mode.
An automatic test sequence is started in meter testing mode from the se-
lected load point of a table (1 … 9) and continues to the end of the load point
table.

Switch-off the outputs of the source

Currents are switched off. A running test sequence is interrupted.

For the meaning of the LED status of the START and STOP key see chapter 4.3.

Attention! Always carefully check the measuring set-up before the source is switched
on. Check that no current is fed back to the PTS 2.3 from any external circuits, if the
internal source is activated.

PTS 2.3 Operation Manual (Version 4) Page 28/77

5.2 Load point tables
The load point tables can be used to perform automatic test runs, if the meter testing function is ac-
tive, or can be used to switch on the predefined source settings of a selected load point, if the meas-
urement or circuit analysis functions are active.
Activate sub menu load point tables

An overview of the programmed load points can be seen.

There are 10 possible load point tables numbered 0 … 9.
The load point table 0 has only one load point. This table
should be selected to run a single load point during error
measurements, if no automatic test run is desired.
Up to 99 different load points can be defined.

The actual selected load point is always shown in the right upper corner. The
0.01 number before the decimal point defines the load point table. The number after
the decimal point the actual selected load point within a table.

Selection of the start load point

During meter testing all load points from the selected start load point to the end load point of the se-
lected table run automatically.
Two ways are available to select the start load point.

Either
Select the load point table with the horizontal cursor keys

Select the load point within the table with the vertical cursor keys

Or
Activate load point tables submenu

Select a load point table with the alphanumerical keypad, e.g. table 5

The first load point of table 5 is selected and the values of I, ϕ and selection of I1,
5.01 I2, I3 are preset as saved under this load point. The parameters for test mode
(imp, t, W) and number of repetitions (n) are also preset in the meter testing mode.

Saving of actual settings to a load point

Select table and load point number, where the actual settings should be stored.
5.02
A long pressure (several seconds) on the M key (until a beep is heard) saves the
actual source settings: I, ϕ, the selection of I1, I2, I3 and the parameters for meter
testing mode (imp, t, W) and number of repetitions n, to the selected load point.

PTS 2.3 Operation Manual (Version 4) Page 29/77

Deleting of load points
To delete a load point, the setting I = 0.0 must be stored in the load point to be deleted. The follow-
ing load points are shifted automatically to the next lower number.

5.3 Alarms
In case of alarm the PTS 2.3 switches automatically off and displays
the reason for the alarm in a screen chart:

Signification of Signification / Cause

7. Meter testing
The function serves to test the errors of the measuring system or the energy registers of electricity
meters.
Meter testing can be performed in the test mode (single place system with source and reference me-
ter) or in the measurement mode (reference meter only). For configuration of the basic operating
modes see chapter 4.5.

Example of error measurement in test mode

The error measurement is performed by detection of the
disk mark revolutions of a mechanical meter or the LED-
impulses of an electronically meter using a suitable
scanning head connected to the impulse input.

Example of register test in test mode

The register test is performed using energy dosage in
the test mode or by energy measurement in the meas-
urement mode. To calculate the register error, the start
reading and end reading of the registers must be en-
tered manually. One, two or three register tests for ac-
tive, reactive and apparent energy can be performed at
the same time in any combination.

The test time can be entered in seconds (t).
Based on the input of t and the actual load PΣ the
number of impulses to test are calculated. The
programmed test time can only be reached ap-
proximately, because the test can only be made
over a whole number of impulses.

W Register test with dosage of active, reactive or apparent energy defined

in [kWh, kvarh, kVAh], depending on the selected measuring mode P,
QN/QX or S.
Instead of impulses the amount of energy (W) to
be dosed is entered (value must be ≥ 0.05).
Constant (C) and repetitions (n) have no meaning
in this mode. The scanning head is not used in
this test mode

Number of repetitions
This input is necessary for the error measurement in the Imp and t test modes.
Enter the required value using the alphanumerical keypad or the vertical cursor
keys.

0 No error measurement is performed. If test mode t is selected, the load

point will be switched on for the set time in automatic test sequences.

Remark
The number of datasets can vary, if a register test is part of the test sequence. The number of tested
registers is defined during the test run by the number of entered initial and end readings. In this case
all three energy registers have been tested. For each register test an own dataset is saved. But reg-
ister datasets are always displayed on the same results page. The indication 3,4,5/5 indicates that
three datasets are displayed at the same time. If only one register would have been tested, the indi-
cation would be 3/3. If two registers would have been tested, the indication would be 3,4/4. With the
same test sequence the total number of datasets can be 3, 4 or 5.
