1. Prejudice
According to Lorchel et al. (2000) the notion of prejudice is limited as a
negative nature that cannot be justified against a group and individual members. Prejudice is a negative behavior that directs the group to the individual based on the limitations or misinformation about the group. Prejudice can also be defined as something that is emotional, which will easily become a motivator for the emergence of social explosions. Meanwhile, another expert, Mar’at (1981) points out that prejudice is conjectures that have positive or negative values, but are usually more negative in nature.
Based on those definitions from the experts, I would like to define
prejudice as a negative feeling towards someone based solely on their membership in a particular group. For example, in daily life, we sometimes meet many new people around us. Once we meet someone that looks different or the way they dress is weird as a woman wears a mini skirt, it will create a prejudice in our mind that this woman is not a good person but maybe the fact is not.
2. Discrimination
Watson (1984) states that discrimination is a negative treatment for certain
group. Whereas Brigham (1991) states that discrimination is treated differently because of its membership in a certain group. The ethnic of group among them are ethnicity, language, customs, religion, nationality and the other. Meanwhile, Swim (1997) states that discrimination is a negative action towards a person who becomes objects of prejudice such as racial, ethnic and religious.
Based on the above definitions, it is obvious that discrimination is all the
negative acts done to look down and to discriminate a certain group or individual regarding their background of family, race, gender, religion or nation. For instance, nerd-looking children are still often used as a joke. They are considered as strange humans and do not have the ability and a good future. Therefore, some students like them in school are usually being bullied by the others. In fact, every human being has his own abilities and potential and also deserves to be respected. 3. Multiculturalism
Lawrence Blum defines multiculturalism as a belief in the form of an
ideology to be able to accept differences in religion, politics, ethnicity, and other differences. Either it is done individually or in certain social groups. Meanwhile, Rifai Harahap states that multiculturalism is a unity of society that is united based on a form of difference for living together. This planned life together is expected to be able to deal with the impact of social phenomena, especially the problem of frequent conflicts.
Based on those two understandings of multiculturalism, I define
multiculturalism as a view that can accept a diversity of people to live with peacefully and safely. For example, Indonesia is known as a country that has a lot of population with different religion. There are Muslims, Christian, Hindu, Buddha and so on, but they can live together in one country. It shows multiculturalism in Indonesia.
