ROLE PLAY SCRIPT FOR MANAGERS’ FUNCTIONS, SKILLS, AND ROLES

CAST:

CEO: Mary Eve Employees: Fitz, Nilscent, Pamela

Manager: Rhea, Rhitzelyn, Cyril

Work Setting: Netflix Inc.

The CEO wants to hold an urgent meeting in order to discuss some important matters
about their company’s update and how they improve their services. So, the CEO
disseminates a memorandum about the meeting through an email or printed memo to the
needed people in the company. They will be discussing such matters through a virtual
meeting.

Eve : Good morning everyone. Thank you for coming in this meeting and I truly appreciate your
presence today.

All in the meeting: Good morning ma’am.

Rhitzelyn: It’s not a problem for us, ma’am.

Eve: I’m glad to hear that. Our agenda for today’s meeting is to update you all about our
company’s performance for this month. Here, let me show you our visual graph in Netflix’s
services overall performance. (shows a chart/graph sa screen)

Eve : As you can see, the numbers of subscribers are quite declining as you also noticed in the
previous months. I wanted to hear your opinions or suggestions you can propose in order for us
to provide better services to our customers.

Rhitzelyn: Ma’am, I would like to suggest to have a price change of the subscription fees.
According to the online surveys that I assessed, the current price is one of the reasons why they
are cancelling their Netflix subscription.

Cyril : I agree with him / her Ma’am. In fact, the demographic profiles of our subscribers have
the majority of students. We believe that prices should be student-friendly.

Eve: That is a wonderful suggestion.

Rhea : Excuse me ma’am, I would like to share an idea.

Eve: Yes, go on Miss Sumalpong.

Rhea:In addition to that, how about we also create a family bundle special price for the Netflix
family viewer’s? By that, the members of their family who are subscribers don’t need to pay
individually since it is already paid as a bundle. As you can see, that strategy of price plan is
also used by the Spotify Music too based on their current business.
Eve: I’ll take note of that too, Miss Sumalpong. Regarding the changes of our subscription fees,
I will consult with our finance management later on. Anything else to suggest?

Cyril: Let us also offer a free trial to those who are interested in subscribing Netflix Ma’am. Their
free trial will be up to 30 days so that we will give audience the access of our service platform.

Eve: Alright, an interesting idea, Mr. Fabro.

Rhea: I would like to suggest Ma’am that we will improve the expansion of our services in
international in order to gain and attract more viewers/subscribers.

Eve: Good, good. Let us not just focus within the home country of the Netflix headquarters but
other continents of the world as well. With the existing social media and technology, it will be
definitely possible to advertise our services.

Rhitzelyn : Regarding in advertising, let us also add creativity into it Ma’am that will make it
unique from other video streaming services. In addition, how about we will have a partnership
with movie industry such as SONY? Through this partnership, we will be able to add diversity of
movie genres in the Netflix’s watch list for subscribers. They will be able to watch their old or
nostalgic movies as well.

Eve: Alright, then. I already take down notes regarding your suggestions for improving our
services. So, I’ll be consulting to my other consultants too so we’ll assess further on these new
changes. Is it alright if we’ll have another virtual meeting tomorrow?

Rhea: No problem, ma’am.

Eve: Good. Thank you for all of your helpful suggestions. Since this will be the end of the
agenda of our meeting, I’ll end our session now. Let’s meet again tomorrow ladies and
gentlemen.

All: ( respectfully) Goodbye and thank you Ma’am!

The following day, they hold another virtual meeting together.

Eve: Good day, ladies and gentlemen. I’m so happy that you are here with me today even it’s
only virtual interaction.

Cyril: It’s not a problem ma’am. How’s the update of your final decision regarding our proposed
changes, Ma’am?

Eve : I’ve talked together with my consultants yesterday and they agreed with these changes.
Aside from that, I also would like to make sure the workflow of the employees and managers are
efficient. So, there will be some changes of the organizational structure in here so that you will
all be working with coordination. So, here is our new organization chart shown in my screen.

I believe in you all that you will responsibly delegate tasks to the employees under your areas.
Rhea: Yes, ma’am. We will all do our best with our responsibilities.

Eve: As managers, if you have some decisions that will benefit to our company, I’ll trust your
judgments.

Rhitzelyn: You can count on us, Ma’am. We’ll definitely not fail you.

Eve: Thank you, miss Barredo. I would like to remind you that this is not for me but for our
company’s vision & mission as we provide good video streaming services to our customers and
improve our connections with them. Are there any questions?

Managers: None so far, Ma’am.

Eve: Alright,then I’ll wrap up this meeting. Thank you everyone once again for your time to
attend here.

Managers: Goodbye and thank you Ma’am!

After approving of the plans and the assigned tasks organized in organizational structure signed
by CEO, the managers sent a message through text, chat, or email to the employees under
their team regarding their updated tasks or assigned works.

Today is Monday and this is the first day of Pamela, Fitz, and Nilscent as new employees in
Netflix Inc. They successfully passed the rigid selection process to work in Netflix Inc. They are
all quite nervous yet excited as they are eager to face new challenges in their desired careers.
They will be joining with other newly hired employees in attending an employee orientation
through a virtual setting.

Rhitzelyn: Good day, ladies & gentlemen! Welcome to the Netflix family!

Pam,Fitz,Nilscent: Good morning, ma’am!

Rhitzelyn: I am Miss Rhitzelyn Barredo. As your manager, I’ll be giving you an orientation about
the rules and regulations of our company and about your jobs as well.

After the orientation

Rhitzelyn: So, this is the end of our orientation. Are there any questions you want to ask?

All: None so far, ma’am.


Rhitzelyn: Alright! Once again, welcome to the Netflix Inc. and if you ever feel confused or lost in
your tasks, don’t hesitate to ask the managers here for some clarifications and don’t be
intimidated by us. Thank you for joining with me everyone!

5 days later passed…….

Pamela, Fitz, and Nilscent are working in different areas in Netflix Inc. Nilscent is in the
team for the production of their original Netflix series, Fitz is in IT department, and
Pamela is in Creatives and Advertising team.

Nilscent: ( ga gamit ug laptop or computer sa production) It’s been almost 1 hour and
the export of this special trailer is taking so long. Maybe I should wait a few more
minutes and eat some snacks for a while.(pwede pud mugawas or depende ni Nilscent )

After literally 30 minutes

Nilscent: ( balik na sa iyang laptop and na shock) Huh?? It’s still rendering?? From 10%
to 14% loading? How will I increase the speed? Should I search in the internet for
answers?? No! It might make it worse. I guess I have to call my manager.
( phone call with Cyril)( mo tubag si Cyril)

Cyril: Hello, Cyril here!

Nilscent: Good afternoon Mr. Fabro. It’s me, Nilscent, one of the new members of your
production team. I need your help related to my task sir.

Cyril: Ahh! Mr. Nilscent. What is it??

Nilscent: Actually, I’m done in finalizing the special trailer for our upcoming original
Netflix series. However, the export process of the video is the big problem here since
it’s been rendering too long for around 1 hour.

Cyril: How many percent is it currently in?

Nilscent: It’s still 15% as we speak, sir.

Cyril: I see. How about this? Try to cancel your export process and change the other
advanced settings of the video editor you are using like change the fps a bit. If it still
fails, perhaps change the video format from mp4 to mov. ( kung maka add pa ka pwede
puud hahaha).

Nilscent: I’m following your instructions as we speak sir. Oh, I changed the movie format
sir. Thanks a lot Mr. Fabro. I definitely learned something helpful from you.
Cyril: No problem, Mr. Taleon.

Rhitzelyn: ( phone calls ni Fitz) Good morning, Mr. Fegidero. Are you getting along with
your co-workers in the IT department?

Fitz: Good morning, ma’am Barredo. Yes, ma’am. I feel welcome in this new work
environment with their open arms.

Barredo: (very happy) I’m glad to hear that, Mr. Fegidero. By the way, how’s your
development of the official Netflix website.

Fitz: It is still in the process ma’am. I was able to solve some of the issues in the web
development thanks to the blueprint of an effective website making that you emailed to
our team.

Barredo: Very good. After the web developments, I will take charge to fix some bugs
that will disrupt the performance of the website. I already send some security codes to
all members in the IT department. This will be embed or attached to the website and it
will be done after the whole IT team verified the security codes. Through this, it will
strengthen the online security of our streaming services and avoid hacking as well.

Fitz: This is duly noted, ma’am. Thank you for informing maam.

Barredo: You’re welcome.

Rhea: ( tawag ni Pamela) Good afternoon, Miss Intruzo.

Pamela: Good afternoon, ma’am Sumalpong.

Rhea: I am honestly surprised at your unique advertisement concept that you


collaborated with your seniors. It is really wonderful and refreshing to our viewers!

Pamela: Oh, thank you Maam Sumalpong. I don’t think I deserved that too much praise
since I’m still a newbie here.
Rhea: You truly deserved it, miss Intruzo. I want you to be proud of your creative skills
because it is really difficult to harness that kind of skills.

Pamela: Oh, okay Ma’am.


Rhea: Miss Pamela, what’s wrong? Is there a problem?
Pamela: Yes, I mean no ma’am. I’m totally fine.
Rhea: I can tell you are not. Please be honest with me.
Pamela: It’s nothing serious. I just got in the bad side of one of my co-workers.

Rhea: Why? What happened?

Pamela: I don’t know why she is mean to me. She told me that I should know my place
and not to act mighty with all the praises. She keeps giving me a bad glare at me
whenever we pass by at work and she doesn’t interact too much with me during lunch
breaks. I can’t even focus at my work because of what she said.

Rhea: Oh,no. I didn’t know that you were treated like that. I’ll talk to your co-worker
about this because want to foster a positive and healthy workplace. Miss Pamela, don’t
lose confidence at your skills. ( Pwede ikaw ra mo add sa imong part na mo motivate ug
counsel ni ate pam?hehe)

Pamela: Thank you for your advice and motivation, ma’am rhea. I’m so fortunate to
have you as my manager!

Rhea: Don’t worry about it, Miss Pamela. It is my job to guide the talented people in our
Netflix family.

After several weeks, there is a good news in the company. Sony is officially in
partnership with Netflix. The CEO would like to publicly announce it through a speech.

Three days after the public announcement, the CEO holds a meeting with the managers
regarding their updates.

Eve: Good day everyone! Thank you for attending to our meeting today. I know that all
of us are truly happy especially with our official partnership with SONY.

Rhea: Indeed, ma’am. The partnership was widely trending around the world in different
social medias.
Eve: That’s right, miss Sumalpong. Now, I would like to present you all this month’s
Netflix’ performance. So, if we compare it the previous months, the number of
subscribers are increasing in this month of July.

Cyril: That is true, Madam. We even attract more subscribers in the other countries too.

Barredo: The partnership with SONY is one of the factors here too because there are
additional movies and series added in the watch list. With diversity of genres, the more
choices they will choose. And since the website and apps of Netflix is newly developed,
there are no unnecessary disturbances such as lags.

Rhea: The new angle and unique advertising concepts developed by the creative and
advertisement team headed by me also created an impact to the viewers too.

Cyril: I’m amazed by the production of the original Netflix documentaries, trailers, series
and movies are high quality as well. A lot of viewers reacted with positive comments.
There may be some criticisms but we always strive our best in finalizing our
masterpieces.

Eve:Yes, these results truly show a positive sign that we are truly improving our
services. I am so thankful to have you all as the managers of this company. There may
be times you are struggling since it is not an easy task to all.

Rhea: I’m also thankful with my subordinates and employees as well.

Rhitzelyn: Same here. The success of the company wouldn’t be possible without us
being united in the same goals & objectives.

Cyril: That is why we, the managers, wanted to give a good remuneration to our
talented employees since they all deserved it.

Rhitzelyn: If it’s okay for you, Ma’am.

Eve: Sure, it’s not a problem for me. Before I forgot to tell you, next month, there will be
an employee’s night held in the famous hotel. This is my idea for all of you to enjoy your
night as well.

All : Wow! Thank you so much Ma’am Eve.

Eve: No problem, everyone. We may be rise and fall but it is important that we should
never give up on our goals. Importantly, how we treat others is also a vital part of our
success because a good character leads to a successful no matter what kind of position
you are in.
