recognize the contributions of doctors to individual lives and communities. The date varies from nation to nation depending on the event of commemoration used to mark the day. “Observation, Reason, Human Understanding, Courage; these make the physician”. Doctors have always played a very important role in the development of our society. This day is dedicated to all the doctors and healthcare workers who have been serving the people and the society from a long time. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it has once again reminded people about the contributions of healthcare workers across the world. The day is also observed to thank doctors for their relentless service to human kind.
In India, the National Doctors‟ Day is celebrated
on 1st July every year to mark the birth anniversary and honor the contributions of the former West Bengal Chief Minister, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was a renowned physician, philanthropist, and educationist. The first National Doctors‟ Day was celebrated in the year 1991. He played an instrumental role in the establishment of various institutions in India like the Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, among others. He was awarded with the highest civilian award of India i.e. the Bharat Ratna Award in 1961.
For 2021, the day is observed to recognize the
efforts of all the doctors and those healthcare workers who are putting their lives at risk in these hard times, be it in primary or secondary care settings or in COVID care facilities. India‟s strides in the world of medicine are commendable and have contributed to making our lives better and healthier.
Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Medical
Association (IMA) gave a report stating that 748 doctors succumbed due to Covid-19 in the first wave and 798 doctors have lost their lives in the second wave of coronavirus. But still, they are ready to treat the people to save them from this deadly virus by risking their lives.
Not only in the COVID times have they
stepped forward to save the mankind but the doctors and all the healthcare workers have always worked hard as frontline workers to secure the health of the society. I remember an incident. When I was in Class 8th, I went for cycling late night with two of my friends. Midway, suddenly I lost my balance and fell off the bicycle causing serious injury to my chin and legs. I was in severe pain and luckily, my parents arrived early and took me to the hospital. It was almost midnight when we went to the hospital. It was a time when almost all of them are off-duty. But when I reached the hospital, I got immediate and very good response. There were 2 doctors who were about to leave but seeing me, they stopped and came back for my treatment right away. I was in severe pain that time. Finally, the treatment was successful and I recovered faster i.e. earlier than the stipulated time. That time, my respect on the doctors and the healthcare workers only increased.
They proved that they are the bravest
warriors and the true heroes in these crucial COVID times. Without even thinking about the risk/threat possessed to their lives, they have been working day and night trying to cure people from this deadly disease which has already took lives of many. And after working hard for these one and a half long excruciating years, they have finally developed a vaccine for this virus which is really working well on many people as people who have contracted the COVID-19 virus have recovered safely after taking the vaccine.
These COVID times are a test for them to
prove their true capabilities and they have once again proved that they are always ready to accept any challenge and overcome it with proper planning and determination. This phase helped „us‟ i.e. the common people of the society to realize the actual importance of doctors to the mankind. Without them, it would have been impossible for us to overcome and win this war over the COVID-19 virus.
Therefore, I would like to conclude by
saying that God cannot be everywhere. So, he sent the Doctors with excellence and selflessness to our rescue. On this eve of National Doctors‟ Day, wishing every healthcare worker a very Happy Doctor‟s Day. Wishing them good health and prosperity all throughout their life.
