6. Instructional System
The Distance Education (DE) system is more learner-oriented, and the
student has to be an active participant in the entire teaching-learning
process. SMU-DE follows a multi-channel approach for instruction and
comprises a suitable mix of the following: 
 Printed Self Learning Material(SLM)
 Counselling
 Assignments
 Technology Support
The University follows the “Credit System” for its program. Each credit is of
30 hours of study comprising all learning activities viz. Self-Study (19 Hrs.),

BBA Programme Guide PG0078 Page No.: 5

counselling (3 Hrs.), Activities in EduNxtTM such as attempting Quizzes,
Model Question paper, reading additional support contents (5 Hrs.), and
Assignments (3 Hrs.). Thus, two Credits and four Credits course require
60 Hrs. and 120 Hrs. of study time respectively. Credit System indicates the
effort which the student has to put to successfully complete the subject.
Completion of the Program requires successful completion of Assignments
(Refer to Section 7.1), the Term End University Examination (Refer to
Section 7.2), and Project (Refer to Section 8.0).
6.1 Printed Self Learning Material (SLM)
Printed study material is the primary form of instructional material. The
University provides the printed study materials developed to stimulate
independent learning. Such materials are called Self Learning Materials
(SLM). On admission/re-registration to a semester of program, students can
obtain the Self Learning Materials from the University. Each SLM comprises
several units. Each unit begins with an introduction in which we tell you
about the contents of the unit. We also outline a list of objectives which we
expect you to achieve after studying the unit. This is followed by the main
body of the unit, which is divided into various sections and sub-sections. We
end each unit by summarising its content. In each unit, there are several
Self-Assessment Questions (SAQs) and Terminal Questions (TQs)/
Activities/Exercises. These are meant to help you to assess your
understanding of the subject contents.
6.2 Counselling
In distance education, counselling provides an opportunity for you to interact
with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). The purpose of counselling is to give
you an opportunity to ask questions and clarify your doubts.
Before attending the counselling sessions, we advise you to go through your
study material and make a plan of the points to be discussed with subject
matter expert. Unless you have gone through the units, there may not be
much to discuss. Please visit EduNxtTM portal for Counselling Schedule.

6.3 Assignments
A theory course in a semester will have Assignment/s. To complete the
course, one has to attempt the Assignment/s. You will find the Assignment
Question paper in your EduNxtTM login. The completed Assignment is to be
submitted to the University for Evaluation for the award of the Internal
Assessment (IA) marks. For more details, refer section 7.1.

BBA Programme Guide PG0078 Page No.: 6

6.4 Technology Support (EduNxtTM)
In addition to counselling sessions, University also provides you an
opportunity to discuss with the University faculty and your peers via
Discussion Board available on EduNxtTM. We encourage you to post your
subject-related queries on Discussion Board. Faculty assistance will be
available through Live Webinar sessions, Discussion Board and through a
dedicated E-Mail support for project work. Students are recommended to
use any/all of the above mentioned academic support services to get
guidance for successful completion of course.

7. Evaluation System
