Exercise 1: Producing Isometric Drawing

This document provides instructions for producing an isometric drawing in CAD. It includes the following steps: 1) Setting up the drawing space as an isometric grid. 2) Drawing lines to form a cube shape using isometric line and circle commands. 3) Adding dimensions and leaders to fully define the isometric object. 4) Optional techniques like creating round corners and dimension editing are also demonstrated. The goal is to teach CAD users how to construct accurate isometric views of 3D objects.

UEME1253: CAD module 4 UTAR

Module 4

Exercise 1: Producing isometric drawing

1. Create a new A3 size drawing (Acadiso).

2. Right click at Grid on status bar and select Isometric snap in 1 , check 2D model
space in 2 , and uncheck Adaptive grid and Display grid beyond Limits in
3

Notice that now the Grid and Snap are in Isometric style.

3. Press F5 button on your keyboard in order to change Isoplane to Top.

4. Turn on Polar, set the polar increment to 300, then use line to draw the cube as shown
below.
UEME1253: CAD module 4 UTAR

5. Continue then line from point 7 and 5 to point 10 and 12, respectively.

6. Make sure your current isoplane is Top. Draw an Isocircle with center at point 11 (2
point away from point 10 and 12).

Command: _ellipse For isocircle

Specify axis endpoint of ellipse or [Arc/Center/Isocircle]: i
Specify center of isocircle: <Select point 11>
Specify radius of isocircle or [Diameter]: 20

of the ellipse

7. Draw 2 vertical lines from point 8 and 13 to point 9 and 10, respectively.
8. Copy lines 8-10-12-13, select based point at point 8 and paste the lines to point 9.

9. Complete all the Isocircles on the object. Remember to use proper Isoplane when
drawing Isocircle on the surfaces.

10. Both Isocircles 16 and 15 are holes, thus, it is necessary to present its depth. To draw
the isocircle at the bottom surface, you can copy the isocircle at the top surface, e.g.
isocircle 16, and paste it 20mm down vertically. Then trim the unwanted line as
shown below.

Trim the unwanted line so

that only the visible curve is
presented

11. Repeat step 10 for hole 15.

Dimensioning for Isometric drawing.

• Use aligned dimension for linear dimensioning

• Use multileader for isocircle

Aligned dimension

Leader

1. Open IsoCube.dwg
2. Select Aligned dimension, Click on line 2-5. Repeat the Aligned dimension for line 5-
6 and 6-7.
Remember : It is always desired to aligned the dimension with Isometric Axes.

3. To aligned the dimension to Isometric Axes. Type below command:

Choose
For (1) dimension Oblique
Command: dimedit
Enter type of dimension editing [Home/New/Rotate/Oblique] <Home>: o
Select objects: <select dimension (1)>
Select objects: <press enter>
Enter obliquing angle (press ENTER for none): 150

For (2) dimension

Command: dimedit
Enter type of dimension editing [Home/New/Rotate/Oblique] <Home>: o
Select objects: <select dimension (2)>
Select objects: <press enter>
Enter obliquing angle (press ENTER for none): 30

For (3) dimension

Command: dimedit
Enter type of dimension editing [Home/New/Rotate/Oblique] <Home>: o
Select objects: <select dimension (3)>
Select objects: <press enter>
Enter obliquing angle (press ENTER for none): 150

4. To measure Isocircle, select Leader then

Specify leader arrowhead location or [leader Landing first/Content first/Options]
<Options>: <click on the circumference of the Isocircle point 1 >
Specify leader landing location: <click on 2 point>

After click on 2 , key in R20 in 4 and click OK in 5
