Job interview
December 2020

Introduction:

This project is assigned to me for job interview of optometrist. The main purpose of this project is to gain
some experience that how to take and give interview and what kind of question interviewer may ask us and
how to give answer efficiently, and also to learn from OPTOMETRIST experience. I requested an optometrist
for an interview and was conducted virtually by zoom; the dialogues and transcript of an interview as fellows

Fazeela(Q): Asslam o Alaikum kashifa! First of all thank you so much for your time I hope your doing well
Kashifa(A): Walaikum slam ,Yes Alhamdulillah

Fazeela(Q): How you are spending time in quarantine? Specially in clinic how you are dealing with COVID-19
Kashifa(A): This time has been very productive I have completed many projects and working on self-grooming
as far as my clinic related is concerned we are strictly following SOPS to prevent from this deadly virus.

Fazeela (Q): First tell me about yourself

kashifa(A): I am an optometrist at Sharif city hospital and I graduated from university of Faisalabad . Currently
with the job I am also doing Master in vision science.

Fazeela(Q): Why you considered it worth studying and what fascinate you to opt it as career?
Kashifa(A): Optometry is what I wanted to be ,from my childhood I am very curious about science wanted to
learn. Not having a vision problem myself, I have always been fascinated as to why people had trouble seeing
clearly. I knew nothing about eye diseases so I felt a desire to learn everything I could to help as many people
see at their best.

Fazeela(Q): What area of optometry do you enjoy most?

Kashifa(A): This one is interested question , I love neuro part of optometry as saying, we are seeing with brain
not with eye ,brain is such a wonderful creation of God if you study and research on brain you would amazed
by its function, its whole new world

Fazeela(Q): What are your clinical strength?

Kashifa(A): My clinical strength is dealing with difficult patient. Actually I have strong grip on how to handle
different people and deal with their situation.

Fazeela(Q): In this line of field, patients are main focused. How do you make your patients feel comfortable or
valued because some people are really scared of doctors?

1
Kashifa(A): This is very important question, I always make sure I am listening to all questions and concerns
Whenever I am with a patient, it’s my priority . To feel more comfortable I always start with introducing
myself if it is a new patient or saying, "it's good to see you" if it's a regular patient. Before the patient comes to
me, I make sure I review his or her chart. Another important part of this process is making sure the patient is
comfortable. To achieve this, I explain each procedure and tell the individual what to expect in order that
there are no surprises.

Fazeela(Q): When it comes to optometry, what excites you?

Kashifa(A):I love the sciences and working with people, and I saw this profession as a very clean way to
practice in a medically related field. Ever since I have become an optometrist, I have only become more
excited, vision is most part of the body through your eyes you can see the beauty of this planet, also because
nothing makes me happier than helping someone see well. Personally, I remain excited about my own career
because I can recognize all of the specialties and subspecialties I can pursue.

Fazeela(Q):Where do you see yourself professionally in 10 years and how do you plan to get there?
Kashifa(A):Recently I was reading “WHO report on blindness and primary health worker”. I got to know that
situation would be more serious in poor economy countries because they don’t have any much more
resources to deal with such massive number of people with ocular defects. So I am seeing myself in those
areas where eye problems are very dangerous, my only purpose in this field is to help people seeing clearly. I
want to contribute in any way I can to the practice including hard work, continuing education, and spreading
awareness about eye health and its primary care and volunteering my time to the underprivileged.

Fazeela(Q): How would you handle conflict between staff members?

Kashifa (A): There is not any straight forward answer to this question. I think best answer is keeping mind cool
and relax and this is very important in this type of conditions then I will try to negotiate with the member.
Communication is the key for solving conflicts between me and member.

Fazeela(Q): In this practice some patients are children or it would be not wrong to say that usually are
children, so how you deal with them and what’s your method to do procedure on them?
Kashifa(A): Yes it is little bit harder to deal with but I create environment for them to divert their attention ,I
also try to make fun for children and kids when it comes to glasses. I always recommend durable glasses when
parents are looking for glasses, children are most likely to break glasses.

Fazeela(Q):What would you do if a patient disagreed with your vision assessment ?

Kashifa(A):This is interesting one actually this happened to me once when I gave eye drops for dry eye to a
patient , he said that he can’t use ye drops so give me eye glasses and this is quite funny that we do not
prescribe glasses for dry eyes. So i tried to convince him and luckily he did. But whenever I would have to face
that situation i will try to understand the reason that why or what’s the reason that the patient is disagreed
with assessment then try to solve that problem.

Fazeela(Q): What do you do with your free time when the schedule is light?

2
Kashifa(A): when I don’t have patient scheduled ,I spent my free time with family because mostly I remain
busy in my clinic so could not get too much time to spend with my loved ones, also loves to read books and
newspaper.

Fazeela (Q): what is the difference between costumer and patient?

Kashifa(A): This is very good question the main difference between costumer and patient is we sell our
product to costumer and we diagnose and treat patient help to save lives but now days we are more focus on
status ,Competitive life so sometimes health care provider try to sell their products rather than focusing on
lives.

Fazeela(Q): What will be the future of optometry in next 15 to 20 year what do you think?
Kashifa (A): According to WHO report on vision that the global need of eye care provider is projected to
increase dramatically in the coming decades. According to Modern optometry council that roughly 20 million
people need routine checkup and examination in 2025 in US alone it does not include increased volume of
surgery will be required in aging population. Here is just very small number mentioned, so yes we need more
optometrist and eye health care provider in future. Its demand is increasing day by day

Fazela(Q): This is the last question I want to ask please can you give 3 tips to help to maintain healthy
eyesight?
Kashifa(A):Yes why not here is the tips if you follow them you would not have to face much eyesight problems
these are
1. Remember 20-20-20 rule
Mostly our time spend in front of screens spending so much time in front of laptops or mobile can cause
myopia or other diseases, to prevent from this what you have to do is after 20 minutes of work on screen look
20ft away from screen for 20 sec.
2. Keep Hygiene and clean your eyes on daily basis to prevent from any microbial infection in
eyes
3. Eat healthy diet take food rich in antioxidants like vitamin c also don’t forget your
comprehensive eye routine checkup after one or two years

Fazeela(Q): At the end I would like ask to you to give some advice to us (optometry students)
Kashifa(A) : Now days I am observing that students specially in this field are very confused and have lack of
confidence in their field. This is because this is emerging and a lot has to be done, it take some time to
complete as field ,but don’t be disappoint you are in core of health field as I have also mentioned earlier that
demand of optometrist is increasing dramatically according to WHO. So have a faith, believe in yourself
believe in your power, shine and fly and don’t let other to demotivate you, surround yourself with people who
encourage you, empower you .

Fazeela: I’m very humbled by your kindness and also very grateful for your valuable time you have given to me
Kashifa: thank you for your kind gesture
3
Conclusion:
This interview was very productive got opportunity to learn many new things related to optometry. That this
field is increasing very fast as compared to other. Interest and passion play major role it helps to become
master on it, as there is nothing more beautiful than help people to see clearly, so we have to have faith and
believe what we are doing. When we are confident in whatever we are doing we can easily handle difficult
situation not only in professional life but in other part of life as well. While working it’s important to listen
patient carefully and make feel them comfortable. If patient is not satisfied with the assessment use another
procedure show them variety every people is different and have to deal everyone differently we can’t set
everyone into single mould. If you would encounter any conflict among team member or with colleague .First
try to relax mind and negotiate and communicate to solve, communication is key.
