The role of nurse is an extremely broad one, but nurse leaders specialize in their areas of
expertise. Nurse leaders are an asset needed to facilitate communication with ongoing quality
improvement measures and administrations need to understand the frontline workers (Bender,
2016). To operate effectively in this role, nurse leaders, need to be involved in the
implementation of everyday practices and implementation of improvements. In that way they can
have the experience to develop and grow their specific unit through advocacy for staff and
patients.
Personal Improvements
When transitioning into a nurse leader role, nurses need to have the experience to be a
resource for other nurses as well as the confidence to effectively communicate with other staff.
This increases the likelihood that improvement measures are embraced by staff instead of seen as
an authoritarian edict. Nurse leaders should find ways to practice and enhance their emotional
intelligence which improves their own recognition of emotions and builds their understanding of
others emotions through empathy (Prezerakos, 2018). This can be done through mindfulness
meditation, but mostly comes from experiences and reflection on their experiences. Time
management is also an important factor in a nurse leader’s role. Due to the broad spectrum of
their specialized role in their unit, nurse leaders need to be able to allocate time for patient care,
education, communication between stakeholders, and research into better practices (Heinen et
al., 2019). A measure to improve time management is scheduling through use of a day planner
Utilizing technology to facilitate exchange of information is a helpful tool and nurse leaders
should be familiar with the programs and assets available to their unit or facility. An overarching
3
theme to the nurse leader is providing understanding between multiple parties about
understanding the goals, improvements, practices, and implementations needed. A nurse leader
should have experience with multiple facets of care, from environmental services to the CEO,
understanding the aspects of each role and the measures each role seeks to achieve. Nurse leaders
need to have an understanding about the barriers to implementation of improvements and be able
to communicate those barriers which allows for the multiple departments to understand why
implementations or changes are taking longer or what difficulties a change creates (Heinen et al.,
2019).
