Activity 1: Polarity Experiment Materials:: Perfomance Task
Activity 1: Polarity Experiment Materials:: Perfomance Task
Procedure:
1. Obtain 6 clean disposable glasses and prepare the following set up.
Set -up 1: 1 cup of water + 5 tablespoons vinegar
Guide Question:
a.) Which of the following set -ups mixed well? Which did not?
answer:
As what I see, Water is a polar molecule. Oil is a non-polar molecule. These two substances do not mix
together, they are immiscible (they will not mix together) you can see it in the 2nd picture provided at the
top. Vinegar is polar that's why it gets along with water and alcohol as well as the water and alcohol
towards each other, It's in the 1st and 3rd pic. The oil and vinegar can't mix up as you can see in the 4th
picture. In the 5th pic, the vinegar and alcohol mix on each other but you can still notice their difference
because water is a molecular substance while alcohol is a chemical compound. Lastly, the oil and alcohol
are miscible since two liquids dissolve in one another.
b.) What can you infer from the result of this activity?
answer:
The experiment shows us how polar molecules and non-polar molecules behave when added together. If
two kinds of molecules are added together that are both polar molecules, they will mix up, and if two non-
polar molecules are added, they will also mix and are miscible. They are miscible. Miscible means that the
two things can mix together. However, if a non-polar molecule and a polar molecule are added together,
they will not mix together. This is called immiscible. Immiscible means that the two kinds of molecule
cannot mix together.
