EECQ 4141 Course Outline

This course introduces students to agro-hydrological principles and irrigation and drainage engineering. The course objectives are to equip students with knowledge of irrigation systems, calculating crop water demand, and selecting appropriate irrigation systems. Over ten weeks students will learn about irrigation water requirements, soil-water-plant relationships, irrigation scheduling, types of irrigation systems, sources of irrigation water, wastewater use, and management of irrigation schemes. Assessment includes CATs, assignments, and an exam.

EECQ 4141: Irrigation and Drainage Engineering I

Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to agro‐hydrological principles and equip them with
basic knowledge and skills for irrigation and drainage engineering.

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
1. Define the agricultural aspects of irrigation and be able to calculate the water demand of
different crops
2. Define different irrigation systems and be able to select the appropriate system

Course content
Introduction to Irrigation: definition of irrigation, types, merits, and demerits. Sources of irrigation
water. Irrigated agriculture: soil – water-plant relationship, irrigation water requirement, irrigation
scheduling and efficiencies, Waterlogging and salinity: causes and management. Types of irrigation
systems. Wastewater use in irrigation, Management principles of irrigation schemes.
