INTRODUCTION:
Every child has a right to learn to read
– and every child requires literacy skills to
open up life choices and opportunities.
Children have a greater chance of success in
school and later life if they develop
foundational skills such as literacy. The global
COVID-19 pandemic and the consequences of
lockdowns are magnifying the existing
literacy challenges and exponentially
increasing the inequity between children who
are supported to read and those who aren’t. It
also entailed a sudden change of all aspects
of our everyday life. Many were confined to
their homes as isolation, unable to attend
different life events and activities due to
infection prevention.
As we adjust to life in the world of remote
learning, families and educators are continuing to
refine at-home instructional reading routines—
especially for students who experience difficulties
with reading comprehension. Whether students
read fluently or haltingly, they may find it
challenging to summarize, answer questions,
figure out unknown vocabulary, and unlock
deeper meaning.
In view of these patterns of changing reading habits
during times of confusion and signs that such changes were
happening during COVID-19, Eulalio N. Adriano Elementary
School headed by its principal Jesusa L. Sigua decided to
implement the “Project Reading Rescue” to continue the
reading habits among our learners, wherein not only the
teachers and learners are involved but greatest part of it are
their parents.
