Instructions:

1. Paper will be divided into two parts. Objective and Subjective

2. Objective part will be taken back after first 10 minutes and student will have total 3
hours to solve the paper.
3. No one is allowed to ask any question during the exam. Make assumptions for the
missing data and use your intuition to correct if found any errors.
4. There is no negative marking.
5. In your solutions you need to show not only the answers but the steps or rationale you
used to arrive at the answer. Your answers need to be complete enough to make your
work checkable. Box your final answers.
6. Use both sides of the sheets. If you need more space, you may attach a paper with
the continued part of the problem clearly designated as the continued part.
7. Write your registration no. on all pages. Any page without reg. no. will not be marked.
8. Use your own calculators and graphical tools. Exchange of tools is not allowed during
the exam.
9. Highlight important portion of your graphical work with pen after completion and make
sure that graphical part is neat and clean.
(All variables have their usual meanings. All angles are measured CCW from the
positive x-axis of LCS. x is the last digit of your reg. no. If your reg. no. is 2016123, then
x is equal to 3)
1. Write matrix equation for a link pivoted to ground with External Force Fe applied at
its free end along with the free body diagram. (4+1)
CLO2, PLO2, C4

2. Design a double dwell cam to move a follower from 0 to (30+x) mm in 45 degrees,
dwell for 150 degrees, fall (30+x) mm in 90 degrees and dwell for the remainder. The
total cycle must take 6 sec. Choose suitable polynomial function for rise and draw
SVAJ diagram. What will be the jerk at 40 degrees of cam rotation? (6+4+2)
CLO1, PLO3, C4

3. The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 3500 kg. It has a radius of gyration of 0.45 m
and a speed of 3000 r.p.m. clockwise when looking from stern. Determine the
gyroscopic couple and its effect upon the ship when the ship is steering to the left on
a curve of (100+x) m radius at a speed of 36 km/h. (4 + 1)
CLO2, PLO2, C4

4 of 7
4. A shaft fitted with a flywheel rotates at (250+x) r.p.m. and drives a machine. The
torque of machine varies in a cyclic manner over a period of 3 revolutions. The torque
rises from 750 N-m to 3000 N-m uniformly during 1/2 revolution and remains
constant for the following revolution. It then falls uniformly to 750 N-m during the
next 1/2 revolution and remains constant for one revolution, the cycle being repeated
thereafter. Determine the power required to drive the machine and percentage
fluctuation in speed, if the driving torque applied to the shaft is constant and the mass
of the flywheel is 500 kg with radius of gyration of 600 mm. (8)
