Identification of research problems
Meaning
Selecting the problem
Techniques involved in defining the problems
Meaning
Research problem is one which requires a researcher to find out the
best solution for the given problem .i.e., to find out by which course of
action the objective can be attained optimally in the context of a given
environment.
Selection of problem
A problem well put is half solved that means a problem clearly stated is
problem half solved. The problem to be investigated must be defined
unambiguously because that will help to discriminate relevant data from
irrelevant ones.. An ill-defined problem may create difficulties.
Sources of problem
The sources from which one may be able to identify research problems
or develop problem awareness are:
Reading
Academic experience
Daily experience
Exposure to field situations
Consultations
Brain storming
Research
Intuition
Formulation of a problem
Formulation of a problem is translating and transforming the selected
problem into a scientific research question. A problem well put is half
solved. There are seven factors strengthening such careful
formulation.
Proper formulation of the problem provides a sense of direction to
the research
Specifies the scope of research
Indicates the limitations of the research
Clarifies the problem
Establishes the major assumptions
Expresses the context of the problem
Provides economy in research
The formulation should include both the what and the why aspect
Merton identifies three principal components in the progressive
formulation of a problem for research
The originating questions (what one wants to know): it indicates what
the problem is.
The rationale: Rationale is the statement of reasons why a particular
question is posed. It states how the answer to the question will
contribute to theory and/or practice
The specifying question: The originating question is decomposed into
several specific questions in order to identify the observation/data
that will provide answer to them.
Steps in formulation
A researcher has to follow the under mentioned steps in formulation of
research.
Developing a title
Working out conceptual model: Develop and define the problem
statement
Defining the objectives: The researcher must decide the questions
to be answered
Limiting the scope: The researcher must demarcate the
geographical limits, time limit and magnitude of the problem
Formulation of hypothesis: it gives direction to research
Operational definitions of the concepts.
