BEHAVIORISM

Behaviorism is formally established by John Watsons in 1913 and
considered as the "Father of Behaviorism". Behaviorism or the behavioral
learning theory is a popular concept that focuses on how students learn.
Behaviorism focuses on the idea that all behaviors are learned through
interaction with the environment.

Behaviorism, also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of

learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired and learned through
interaction with the environment through a process called Conditioning.
Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. Thus,
behavior is simply a response to environmental stimuli. Behaviorists believe
that our responses to environmental stimuli shape our actions.
Perspective
The behaviorist perspective is concerned with how environmental factors
(called stimuli) affect observable behavior (called the response). The behaviorist
perspective proposes two main processes whereby people learn from their
environment: namely Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning.
Both classical conditioning and operant conditioning are processes that
lead to learning. Classical Conditioning pairs two stimuli, while Operant
Conditioning pairs behavior and response.
School and Education
Behaviorism can also be thought as a form of classroom management.
Behaviorist believes that if teachers provide positive reinforcement, or rewards,
whenever students perform a desired behavior, they will learn to perform the
behavior on their own. The same concept applies to punishments.
A common example of behaviorism in schools is positive reinforcement.
A student gets a small treat if they get 100% on spelling test. In the
future, students work hard and study for their test in order to get the reward.
Behaviorism is key for educators because it impacts how students react
and behave in the classroom, and suggests that teachers can directly influence
how their students behave. It also helps teachers understand that a student’s
home environment and lifestyle can be impacting their behavior, helping them
see it objectively and work to assist with improvement.
Approach
The Behavioral Approach. Human behavior is learned; thus, all behavior
can be unlearned and new behaviors learned in its place. Behaviorism is
concerned primarily with the observable and measurable aspects of human
behavior. Therefore, when behaviors become unacceptable, they can be
unlearned.
Belief
Behaviorism emphasizes the role of environmental factors in influencing
behavior to the near exclusion of innate or inherited factors. This amounts
essentially to focus on learning. We learn new behavior though Classical or
Operant Conditioning.
What is Behaviorism Theory?
Behaviorism focuses on the idea that all behaviors are learned through
interaction with the environment. This learning theory states that behaviors
are learned from the environment and says that inherited factors have very
little influence on behavior.
What is an example of Behaviorism?
An example of behaviorism is when teachers reward their class or certain
students with a party or special treat at the end of the week for the good
behavior throughout the week. The same concept is used with punishment.
The teacher can take away privileges if the student misbehaves.
What are the Key Concepts of Behaviorism?
Key concepts of behaviorism comprise the stimulus-response (S-R)
equation. The classical and operant conditioning and the reinforcement and
punishment notions.
What is the goal of Behaviorism?
The goal of behaviorism is to study human nature in terms of observable
behavior. It states that the physical actions and decisions taken by a person in
response or stimuli are the true representatives of personality.
How behaviorism used today?
Behavioral psychology or behaviorism is a theory suggesting that
environment shapes human behavior. It is still used by mental health
professional today as the concepts and theories remain relevant in fields like
psychotherapy and education.
In the classroom, the behavioral learning theory is key in understanding
how to motivate and help students. Information is transferred from teachers to
learners from a response to the right stimulus. Students are a passive
participant in behavioral learning—teachers are giving them the information as
an element of stimulus-response.
Teachers use behaviorism to show students how they should react and
respond to certain stimuli. This needs to be done in a repetitive way, to
regularly remind students what behavior a teacher is looking for.
An obvious advantage of behaviorism is its ability to define
behavior clearly and to measure changes in behavior.
That, according to the law of Parsimony, “the fewer assumptions a theory
makes, the better and the more credible it is”
