Flow Control Valve
Flow Control Valve
Introduction:
Flow control valves use to control the flow of the fluid.
The flow of the fluid controls the speed of the hydraulic equipment’s (cylinder or
actuator). There are two basic types of flow control valves: non-pressure-
compensated and pressure-compensated. The non-pressure-compensated type is
used where system pressures are relatively constant and motoring speeds are not too
critical. They work on the principle that the flow through an orifice will be constant
if the pressure drop remains constant.
1
Objectives:
1. Making a hydraulic circuit showing the function and connection of the flow
control valve by the Automation Studio program.
2. Describe the purpose, construction, and operation of flow control valve.
3. Identify the applications where we can put the flow control valve.
4. Making a hydraulic circuit in the lab, showing the function and connection of
the flow control valve by means of laboratory tools.
Methodology:
Software:
We made a hydraulic circuit using the Automation Studio program as shown
in the Fig (2). The purpose of this circuit is to demonstrate the functions of
the flow control valve, as well as noting the speed change of the actuator.
We used the “Orifice with Non Return Valve” instead of Non-Pressure-
Compensated Valve.
2
Hardware:
We pluged the hydraulic circuit as shown in the Fig (3) below for the purpose
of studying the effect of the flow control valve.
Equipment:
1. Hydrostatic Reservoir.
2. Fixed Displacement Pump.
3. Pressure Gauge.
4. Relief Valve.
5. Flowmeter.
6. 4/2-Way No Valve.
7. Double-Acting Cylinder.
8. Counterbalanced Valve.
9. Pipes.
10. Load.
3
Applications:
• Hydraulic Crane: press tools are to be
lifted for positioning into a power
press by means of a small hydraulic
crane. A double acting cylinder is
used to perform the lifting and
lowering tasks, with flow control
valves being used to control the
speed of the cylinder movement on
both extend and retract strokes.
Discussions:
We noticed the benefit of the flow control valves, which allow to control the
amount of flow rate and then controlling the speed of an actuator.
