(SEM II) THEORY EXAMINATION 2019-20
ENGINEERING PHYSICS II
Time: 3 Hours Total Marks: 70
Note: 1. Attempt all Sections. If require any missing data; then choose suitably.
SECTION A
SECTION B
c) What is Poynting vector? Discuss the work energy theorem for the flow of energy in
electromagnetic field. A 100 watt sodium lamp radiating its power. Calculate the electric field
and magnetic field strength at a distance of 5m from the lamp. [CO-3]
d) Define Fermi Dirac Probability distribution function. Show that at all temperatures, probability of
electron occupancy at Fermi level is 50%. Discuss the temperature dependence of conductivity of
a semiconductor. [CO-4]
e) What is Meissner’s effect? Explain the BCS theory of superconductivity.
[CO-5]
SECTION C
3. Attempt any one part of the following: 7×1=7
a) Describe the structure of NaCl crystal. Give its main features. Explain with the diagram that the
lattice is fcc but its coordination number is that of simple cubic lattice. [CO-1]
b) What is Compton effect? Derive an expression for Compton shift. An X ray photon is found to
have its wavelength doubled on being scattered through 900. Find the wavelength and energy of
the incident photon. [CO-1]
b) Explain the hysteresis curve for ferromagnetic materials. Prove that energy dissipated per cycle
per c.c. of magnetization is equal to area of B-H curve. [CO-2]
b) Write Maxwell’s equations in integral and differential forms and explain their physical
significance. Also prove that electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature. [CO-3]
b) Differentiate conductors, insulators and semiconductors on the basis of band theory of solids.
Calculate the hole and electron concentrations in a p-type semiconductor if the acceptor density is
2 × 1020 atoms/ m3 and intrinsic concentration is 4 × 1019 per m3 at 300 K. [CO-4]
7. Attempt any one part of the following: 7×1=7
a) Derive London’s equations to explain the superconductivity. [CO-5]
b) What are carbon nanotubes? Discuss CVD preparation technique, properties and uses of carbon
nanotubes. [CO-5]
