Geology Lab Report

The document summarizes soil compaction and Atterberg limits tests conducted on a soil sample. The maximum dry density was determined to be 1.8532g/cm3 at an optimum moisture content of 14.8655%. Atterberg limits testing found the liquid limit to be 67.40 and plastic limit 43.54, resulting in a plasticity index of 23.86. Test results were within acceptable ranges. The group recommends standardizing the hammer height for consistency across tests.

INTRODUCTION
Objective
 To determine the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of a soil specimen
 To determine the different Atterberg limits of the soil.
Standard proctor test was conducted to obtain the compaction soil properties and BS-1377 for the
determination of liquid limit.

CONCLUSIONS
The main objective was to determine the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of
the soil. The optimum moisture content was approximately 14.8655%. The maximum dry density
of 1.8532g/cm3. This value also falls into an acceptable range.

For the Atterberg limits test, the objective was to determine the different Atterberg limits of the
soil. The liquid limit was obtained as 67.40, the plastic limit 43.54, and a shrinkage of 13.57%.
The other parameters such as plasticity index were calculated from these values.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Our group recommends implementing a standard height of the hammer above the soil to maximize
consistency among the groups.
