Quezon City University: Project Proposal Title

This project proposal suggests installing basketball hoops over trash cans to encourage proper garbage disposal and segregation. The goal is to reduce litter and promote cleanliness in a fun way. Installing basketball hoop trash cans in public areas could make throwing trash more entertaining while also teaching people the importance of keeping communities clean. Literature reviews found that innovative trash can designs can improve waste sorting behaviors and effective capture rates if they are noticeable and easy to use. The basketball hoop design may help encourage people, especially youth, to properly dispose of their garbage.

A brief descriptive project title

For us, we chose this because through this we can help us to segregate our

garbage, especially on the streets, we know that we just like to throw it somewhere

like playing basketball, it's funny to listen to but Basketball trash can also teach

people the “power of small change” in daily lives. "Shoot for change" every time we

shoot garbage, we bring a change to prevent flooding and other pollution

Problem Statement

This project proposal was aimed to determine the potential of Basketball trash

can. Specifically, it aimed to answer the following:

1. Will it be possible to install basketball hoops over the garbage can on the public

places and streets?

2. How is this project can really help people on their everyday lives?

3. Where will the budget get to be implemented for this project?

4. How does the project affect the cleanliness of the community?

5. Is it possible to implement this project?

Goal of the Creative Project

 To reduce the numbers of garbage in public places and streets.

 To encourage people to become responsible in throwing their waste materials in

a proper manner.

 To implement the proper ways of disposal and segregation of biodegradable and

non- biodegradable waste.

The Significance of the Project

Garbage is everywhere, therefore it is critical to provide a location for it to be

disposed of. As a result, our group came up with this project wherein we will create

basketball hoop trash cans and place it in public areas. In this case, we want to

implement this kind of project because we think that it can help every individual to

become more responsible.

We want to promote the recycling activity which can also help them to make

their life easier. Recycling is key to clean environment in future generation.

Basketball Hoop Trashcan touches people in a sentimental approach.

Basically, it provides ‘fun’ to garbage throwers.

It may appear to be a simple project, but our group believes that it will make a

significant contribution to our community's cleanliness and discipline of the people.

This project will prove that a small action made a tremendous impact.

Description of the Project

The description of the product will be answered in five WH Questions.

Who is this product for?

Quezon City University

The target users are suitable for anyone.

What are the product's basic details ?

General Function

 Sanitation

 Reduce the garbage

 Entertaining and Innovative way of disposing

a waste.

Where would someone use this product?

This product could be indoor and outdoor uses.

When should some use the product?

Our product is one of the daily human need to have cleanliness in our homes,

as long as there is garbage.

Why is this product is useful or better than competitors?

Basket ball trash can was useful to our environment because it can help for

the segregation of our waste materials and can help to make our life easier.

Our product model was made in such a simple materials but posses

the standard quality. It is easy to use and display in public places or even our

home as long as we need a space for our garbage. Our product model also

helps to our garbage collector to easily identify what kind of garbage are we

place inside so they can easy collect it anytime.

Literature Review

This chapter introduces the related literature taken from the books,

internet, unpublished research and other reading materials, which provide

additional information related to the study about basket ball hoop trash can.

Waste management is one of the challenges faced by many countries.

Poor solid waste management will result in various problems in health,

environmental and socio-economic aspects. Since the institution is an agent

of change and through R.A. No. 9003, solid waste management concepts are

being integrated into science education. During this study, a descriptive –

Quezon City University
673 Quirino Highway, San Bartolome, Novaliches Quezon City

quantitative approach was utilized using the researcher-made

instrument - Solid Waste Management Awareness and Practices

Questionnaire (SWMAPQ). A total of 332 Grade 12 students participated in

the study from a State College, of which 68 are Science, Technology,

Engineering and arithmetic (STEM) students, 166 are Technical Vocational

Livelihood (TVL) students and 98 are General Academic Strand (GAS)

students. The result shows that students have enough knowledge in terms of

the definition of solid waste, the effect of improper solid waste disposal, solid

waste prohibited activities, school initiatives towards solid waste, the

importance of solid waste management, and students’ responsibilities.

However, students have low knowledge of the various laws relevant to solid

waste management. Television or radio, parents, and social media are the

sources of that awareness. The result also shows that students have good

solid waste management practices in terms of segregation, reduction, reuse,

recycle and disposal.

The improvement of waste separation is of great interest in mitigating

problems associated with municipal solid waste (MSW) management. Trash

bins are commonly used for waste separation at the source. Thus, appropriate

trash barrel designs are promising to enhance waste collection and separation

performance. This study investigated the effect of trash bin design (Basketball

trash, Colorful trash, Chair trash, etc.) on waste collection and waste-sorting

behaviors in Thailand, which specialize in color preference, setting location,

and perceived ease of finding a trash barrel (noticeability). Trash bins to

separately collect compostable waste, recyclable waste, and PET

bottles were tested. Perceived preferences for colors and noticeability were

evaluated using pairwise comparison by survey questionnaires with a sample

size of 889 respondents. Waste collection experiments were conducted to

reveal waste collection, capture, contamination, and effective capture rates in

three locations for 15 weeks. The results were analyzed via statistical

methods. They suggested that trash bins with the smallest amount of

preferred colors had the very best waste separation efficiencies. On the

opposite hand, color preference towards trash bins had no significant impact

on waste collection. In addition, lower color preference contributed to the

lower noticeability of trash bins. The effective capture rate had a significant

indirect correlation with noticeability. Highlighting the placement of less

noticeable trash bins may help participants practice correct waste disposal.

Lastly, location, unit color, and noticeability of trash bins can affect waste

collection and separation performance. Increasing human awareness through

the appropriate design and setting of trash bins might enable a more efficient

collection of segregated wastes.

The first area of focus will be recycling and waste management. In

order to inform students on why recycling is important, they must first see the

impacts of waste on the environment, they will need to find out about the

current practices and trends with waste. There will also need to be some

discussion on how recycling can limit the waste impact on our earth.

Recycling is one practice that takes items that would be classified as garbage
Quezon City University

and collect and reprocesses them to be made into something new

that can be used again. Taking something that is unwanted and unusable and

turning it into something new is not a new concept to most people. Recycling

in Schools. In 1980, the Minnesota legislature passed the Waste Management

Act. This act aimed to push public schools and other public entities to recycle

at least three different recyclable materials (Countryman &Worner, 2007). The

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency did a study in 2010, of the waste habits of

six schools in Minnesota. It was noted that all the schools in the study had

recycling and organic composting programs in place. Cioci and Farnan found

that 78% of school waste materials could be discarded in either the organics

composting or recycling. It was found that overall the recycling rate of the

schools was 41.15% (Cioci & Farnan, 2010). They 14 found that schools were

about to divert 65.65% of recyclables but only 27.27% of compostables. The

most abundant material of all waste was a food-related waste (Cioci &

Farnan, 2010). Increasing our recycling rates has benefits for the environment

as well as our financials.
