Radiamatic Detectors Specification

and Accessories

Function
The Radiamatic temperature detector
generates an emf proportional to the
temperature of the object sighted. It is
used with potentiometric instruments to
record, indicate or control the
temperature.
Description
Metal case with corrosion resistant
finish. Gasketed metal cover shields
terminals from dust and contaminants 939-1-2
(on all models except Miniature). Rigid
binding posts connect 12 ga. or smaller
copper lead wires to instrument. Moun-
ting attachments available to provide
easy means of mounting unit. Figure 1 —General purpose or high speed Radiamatic models
Available in five models: General Pur-
pose, High Speed, Small Target, Low
Range and Miniature.
When selecting the Radiamatic detec-
tor best suited for an application it is
necessary to consider:
1. Target temperature and the
temperature of surrounding objects.
2. Target size.
3. Target distance from detector lens.
4. Target emittance and reflectance.
5. Type of enclosure the heated object
is in and, if in the open, the percen-
tage of heat emitted in such an
application.
6. Sighting path taking into considera-
tion any vapors or gases. Figure 2—Small target Radiamatic detector
7. Sighting angle if a non-blackbody
application.
Lens
Lens materials are Pyrex, fused silica
and calcium fluoride. Threaded flanges
at the lens and on the optical
diaphragm inside the housing prevent
reflections and marginal rays from
reaching the thermopile. Lenses with-
stand external pressures of 10 psi. A
wide variety of lens angles are
available. 939-83

Thermopile
The thermopile is a radial assembly of
minute thermocouples wired in series.
Radiant energy is focused directly on
the thermocouple hot junctions for Figure 3—Miniature Radiamatic (Part No. 30355631)
highest sensitivity. The portion of the
thermopile that is exposed to the ra-
diant source is blackened to increase
absorption of energy.

Application Data
The following should be completed for all detectors:
1 Target temperature, normal operating temperature, low and high limits.
2 Minimum target size and distance from lens.
3 Target material and emittance.
4 Angle of observation of emitted radiation.
5 Is target stationary or moving? If moving, at what speed?
6 Atmospheric conditions between target and detector.
7 Ambient temperature.
8 Can Radiamatic unit sight directly on target or must it sight through a sealed
auxiliary window, such as required for vacuum or pressure furnace? If known,
give material and thickness of window.
9 Briefly describe mechanical details of application.
10 Type of chart and scale desired, if available. Is scale calibrated for detector or
0-100 evenly divided? If a calibrated chart is not available, and one is re-
quested, do you wish to have a special chart made to meet your
requirements?
11 Type of instruments desired.

Auxiliary Sighting Lens

Lens is in focus with thermopile and pro-
vides a convenient means of inspecting
the image of both thermopile and target.
Inspection is made by raising metal cover
outside of terminal compartment. When
lens is not being used, a self-closing cover
keeps radiant energy from reaching ther-
mopile from the rear.

Sillramic Target Tubes

Developed for use on heat-treating fur-
naces and salt baths. Sillramic is a close-
grained vitrified refractory material which
is highly resistant to both thermal shock
and penetration by furnace gases up to
1595°C (2900°F) for vertical or supported
installations, 1480°C (2700°F) for unsup-
ported installations.
The extension tube is a separate
assembly consisting of a threaded exten-
sion tube and a mounting flange.
The target tube is a separately
replaceable assembly comprised of a
Sillramic tube cemented in a threaded
metal ferrule. Maximum distance from
Radiamatic lens to the target must not ex-
ceed 760 mm (30”).
