RED
CROSS
HISTORY OF RED CROSS
The Red Cross Society is an international
voluntary organization that started in
Switzerland in 1863. It is a society of hope
to the sick and the suffering.
HISTORY OF RED CROSS
The Red Cross Society was founded
by a Swiss man, Sir Jean Henry
Dunant. He was born on May 8, 1828
in Geneva, Switzerland and died on
Oct. 30, 1910 at the age of 82. His
father was a banker. When Dunant
grew up, he became a businessman.
After the death of Dunant, his date of
birth (May 8) is celebrated as the
World Red Cross Day.
BATTLE OF SOLFERINO
On June 24, 1859, Dunant was travelling
through Italy on a business and by
chance, he got to Solferino in Northern
Italy. He wanted to see Emperor Napoleon
III.
BATTLE OF SOLFERINO
In Solferino, he saw that a battle had just
ended between the armies of France and
Italy against that of Austria. The battle
was known as the Battle of Solferino and
it took place less than 24 hours claiming
the lives of about 40,000 people. He was
so sad at the scene and did his best by
catering for the wounded with the help of
the local inhabitants of a nearby village
called Castiglione. He treated the wounded
soldiers.
A MEMORY OF SOLFERINO
Dunant went back to his
country, Switzerland in 1860.
In 1862, he published a book
called, ‘A Memory of Solferino’.
He explained what he saw at
the battlefield in Solferino and
what he did for the wounded.
He also suggested that a relief
society be formed. With this,
an idea was born.
COMMITTEE OF 5
Four other men joined him to
make a Committee of 5 in 1863.
The idea became a reality and
they started the Red Cross Society
immediately. The four men were:-
1. Dr. Louis Appia
2. Dr. Theodore Maunoir
3. Mr. Gustave Moynier
4. Gen. Henry Dufour.
Since then, the Red Cross Society
had continued to grow in so many
countries and it is helping the
human race.
FORMATION OF THE JRC
The Junior Red Cross (JRC) was founded in Australia by Mrs.
Eleanor MacKinnon, OBE in 1914. It was formed in Canada in
1917 and in Great Britain in 1924.
Today, the JRC operates in schools and is part of a worldwide
network of the Red Cross Society. The JRC develops friendship,
and teaches health and safety, and encourages community
services.
The JRC badge is the proudest badge a JRC member can
wear. It is a symbol of hope to the sick and the suffering. The
JRC member must always be neat and clean.
THE RED CROSS EMBLEM
The Red Cross emblem –
a red cross on a white
background which is the
reverse of the Swiss flag
was adopted in 1863. The
Committee of 5 came up
with the idea in one of
their meetings. All the
sides of the cross are
equal.
THE RED CROSS EMBLEM
Apart from the Red Cross emblem, there
are also two other emblems of the
society. These are Red Crescent and
Red Crystal.
THE MOTTO OF RED CROSS
The motto of the International Red
Cross Society is ‘INTER ARMA CARITAS’.
It means CHARITY AT WAR.
The motto of the Nigerian Red Cross
Society is ‘THROUGH HUMANITY TO PEACE’.

International Red Cross. These are:
1.Protection for the wounded soldiers – 1864.

2.Protection for the shipwrecked soldiers – 1906.

3.Protection for the Prisoners of War (POW) – 1929.
