COGNITIVE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SELF

Answer the following in your own words.

1. Define and differentiate self-concept, identity, self-awareness, and self-esteem.
 For me self-concept is a knowledge about us, including our personality, physical
characteristics, personality traits, talents/abilities what we have, and also the knowledge that we
exist as individuals.
 For me Identity is just like self-concept, it is also a knowledge about us but it is the set of
personal characteristics that make one person or even group different from the others.
 I do believe that self-awareness is a knowledge that individuals have that they can use to
manage their behaviors and feelings. It also help individuals to know what things can make
themselves to be true to their self.
 Self-esteem is present to all individuals, it is all about how individual think about their self, the
confident that they have and how they compared to others. It is how individual measure their self and
compare to other, we know that it is good for us but sometimes it couldn’t be. People with overly high
self-esteem may overestimate their skills and may feel entitled to succeed in short they may struggle to
block themselves from self-improvement.
2. Please complete the following:
a. I am a good listener
b. I am god fearing
c. I am strong mentally but not physically
d. I am a resourceful
e. I am a simple person
3. From your answers in number 2, what are the most important aspects of your self-concept, and how
do they influence your self-esteem and social behavior?
 I think all of this is important to me, because all of my qualities helped to shape who I really
am, what character I have, and most of all it helped me to better understand that I still have a lot
to learn in life. I believe that nothing should be change in an individual, the only need is to add
skills and knowledge. All we need to do is to be true to ourselves. In short we should avoid be
hypocritical.

4. Try to identify some situations where you have been influenced by your private and public self-
consciousness. What did this lead you to do? What have you learned about yourself from these
experiences?
 When I encounter a private thing, (please allow me to make it private) this private thing makes
me to have private feelings which is my true feeling and public feeling to hide my inner feeling
and also to protect myself from possible bad things to happen. In other to be safe, to protect
myself and persons that surrounds me. In a person’s life we cannot always be true, sometimes
lying is better for oneself or for others. I have learned to value decision in the situation that
passes, I have learned to think about the consequences of my decision.
5. Describe some situations where you overestimated the extent to which people were paying attention
to you in public. Why do you think that you did this and what were the consequences?
