PE 2: BALLROOM DANCING

Ballroom Dancing
A. Standard Style- more on Classic
B. Latin Style- more on seductive
 Began in the 18th and 18th centuries on Europe when queens and kings were entertained; became
popular in masses in the 1990’s
 Originated from Latin word “ballare” or to dance
 Two individuals, leader and follower
 Social dancing primary purpose is for recreation and entertainment
 Nowadays it became exercise and personal enjoyment
 Also known as “partner dancing”
 Dance (or Competitive Dancing) help revive interest in ballroom dancing
 19th century, ballroom became integral part of P.E in American pub. And priv. school
Types of Ballroom Dances
1.Waltz
 From German word “walzen” means to roll or to turn
 First Popularized in Vienna, Austria
 Known as “Weller” or “spinner”
 Performed fashionably by couples or partners in fast sliding and gliding moves
 First time to see men and women holding their hands so closely that their faces touch, Montaigne,
1580; Close hold position, romantic melodies, counting 3/4
 Characterized by graceful Nd gracious moves
2. Chachacha
 Latin dance orig. in Cuba
 Fun, flirtatious and energetic with a lot of hip mov. And fancy foot works
 Derived from mambo
 Dance in 4/4 time; slow-slow-quick-quick 2-3-4 and 1
3. Tango
 “Baile con corte” to dance with dramatic or artistic poses
 1st performed as solo b women in 19th cent.
 “Andalusian Tango” use castanets
 1st it considered as immoral
 Orig. within the lower classes as the “Barrio de la Ranas” (Buenos Aires)
 Popularized in NY during 1910-1911
 Rudolf Valentino made Tango a hit in 1921; 4/4
 slow-slow-quick-quick- slow
a. Argentine Tango- close embrace where lead follow connected chest to chest
b. International Tango- connected in upper high thigh or hip area
c. American Tango- combination of Argentine and international tango
 Open embrace; where lead and follower have space between their bodies
4. Jive
 Also known in recent years as “swing” is a lively, energetic dance and combining footwork and
graceful arm movements with swirls and dips
 One evening in 1927, SHORTY GEORGE SNOWDEN named it “Lindy Hop”
 Mid-1030’s it was “Jitterbug”
 Laure’ haile
 1940’s made the 1st documentation of the dance and named it “western swing”
5. Foxtrot
 Is a ballroom dance that is lots of fun and simple to learn, excellent for the beginner.
 Is a smooth dance in which dancers make long flowing movements across the floor.
6. Mambo
 Is one of the most sensual and emotional Latin American ballroom dance, swaying hips, facial
expression and arm movements and hold all add to sensuality of dance.
7. Paso Doble
 One of liveliest ballroom dance originating on southern France, it is modeled after the sound,
drama and movement of Spanish bullfight
8. Rumba
 Is considered by many be the most romantic and sensual of all Latin ballroom dances; referred as
the “Grandfather of Latin dance”
9. Samba
 Most popular Brazilian ballroom dances, the samba is a popular with young people as well as
older gen. The samba can be performed solo or with partner.
