INTRODUCTION
A pleasant afternoon, professors and everyone! Today, we are here to discuss our research
concerning Arduino-based Disaster Relief Device with GPS Tracking & Alerts for Flood-Prone
Areas in Marikina City.
We have chosen this subject because it is undeniable and evident that the Philippines has
suffered numerous disasters causing social, economic, emotional, and environmental damage
to communities. As a matter of fact, according to World Risk Index 2020, our country ranked 9 th
among the hundred countries in the world as the most exposed and most vulnerable country to
natural disasters.
Recently, the Philippines faced occurrences of super typhoons. As we have a lot of low-lying
areas, especially areas in Metro Manila, like Marikina City, massive flooding submerged many
places leaving thousands of homes devastated and thousands of victims in need of assistance.
There were performances of disaster risk reliefs and operations, however, due to the pandemic
we are still facing today, there were difficulties in rescuing and locating victims and missing
people. Local authorities lacked in preparedness, coping capacities and emergency response
which led to further risks.
Since technology is rapidly evolving as time goes by, it has become a common tool in mitigating
risks and performing disaster relief efforts further. A wide spectrum of technologies helps the
world from disasters in a variety of areas, particularly GPS, which plays a huge responsibility
with regards to search and rescue operations. Emergency response is easier to perform with
this through its ability in identifying geographic locations of people in need of assistance.
Thus, we want to design Arduino-based Disaster Relief Device with GPS Tracking & Alerts. A
device that will have the ability to track a person’s location through the GPS tracker that helps
local authorities and rescue personnel for emergency response. It will have a button that will
send an SMS of the person’s location to respondents when pressed. Also, it will include a
buzzer that will continuously sound as a call for help to alert nearby respondents.
We want to develop this device because this will ensure better emergency response and is an
innovative countermeasure in hopes of minimization of disaster risks and damages in flood-
prone areas.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. How satisfactory will the device be to the respondents?
- It is important to measure user satisfaction with the device. Considering their
feedbacks and expectations about the usefulness of the device helps recognize what
to maintain or what to improve about the services it can provide. It is a great
opportunity to measure the service to find gaps within the study, and further better
the device and expectingly widen the scope for future studies.
Next is, 2. What are the functions of the Arduino-based Disaster Relief Device with GPS
Tracking & Alerts in terms of: - Effectiveness? - Efficiency?
- Having to understand the function of the device to know if it would really be beneficial
for the users is essential for us as researchers. Through the GPS modem, we can
track the victim's location and it will be processed by the microcontroller, and through
the GSM module, the data processed will be sent to the respective authority. Buzzer
will serve as an alarm as a cry for help within the area. As we conduct interviews and
experiments, we can also gather data from these for us to know not only the
effectiveness of the device, such as successfully performing as a disaster aid, but
also how efficient it would be as well, like performing its job in the best possible way.
Lastly is, 3. Is there a significant difference between the Arduino-based Disaster Relief Device
with GPS Tracking & Alerts and the past local researches of Disaster Management Alarm
System with SMS?
- Knowing the significant difference between this research and previous studies
signifies if there’s any development from the results with respect to previous studies.
It will determine if our findings will support or contradict the previous findings of a
specific study, and show the relationship of both studies in a detailed manner.
SATISFACTION
As I’ve mentioned in our presentation earlier, it is essential to measure user satisfaction with our
device, because they are the main people who benefits from it, and knowing their feedbacks
and expectations with our device helps us know what to maintain or improve or change in order
to meet their satisfaction,
EFFECTIVENESS & EFFICIENCY
Since technology is about advancing aspects of our life, development, and making tasks easier,
it is necessary to achieve this in our device, too. It should be effective in doing its purpose of
performing as a disaster aid device, not only that, it also should be efficient, because it’s a
device, it’s a development, it’s an innovation, so it should perform its tasks, giving the users less
effort and time in operating it.
UNIQUENESS
Well, in most foreign countries from what I’ve read, they already have this kind of device for
disaster aid to be bought on stores. While here in our country, most commonly, what local
authorities do are, providing training and implementing disaster risk reduction programs to
inform the community what to do before, during, and after a disaster occurrence. We often
prepare by strengthening flood-resilient structures, having more evacuation centers, and early
warning system. But as we can see, the actions of rescue personnel aren’t enough. Even with
all these preparedness, there are still unexpected incidents to happen during a disaster, like
being unable to find missing people, and stranded people waiting for hours to be rescued. So,
this device will help further include the community in doing measures of disaster management,
and this will also ensure their safety.
TITLE
We came up with this title because it’s simple and straightforward, and being simple and
straightforward means the general public can understand it, the audience can understand it,
anyone can understand it. It shows the focus of our study, it’s specific, it’s informative, it’s brief
but comprehensive.
Research Design
- prototyping method since focus tayo sa paggawa ng device; qualitative-quantitative yung
design pero hindi ko na in-indicate, if ever lang na tanungin
- sa statistical treatment, since through interview lang naman tayo makakakuha ng datas, verbal
interpretation gagamitin natin with corresponding ratings. Siguro mag-limit tayo ng number of
families and LGUs na pwedeng ma-interview. Kasama yung families since indicated sa
research design na mai-interview natin sila
