REFLECTION PAPER
Last Saturday’s topic was the continuation of the environmental principles. We
tackled three environmental principles; 4, 5 and 6. The fourth environmental principle
states that “Everything Changes”. These changes are categorized in to two; Natural
change and Artificial (Man-made) change. Natural changes pertain to the changes
around us which occurs spontaneously. There are two sub-principles in Natural
changes; Internal and external change. Internal change are those happenings that
occur within the planet such as volcanic activities and earthquakes. External changes
are the phenomena on the planet’s surface such as weathering and erosion.
Meanwhile, Man-made changes are changes that are caused by human activities. We
all know that most of them are negative changes, for example, climate change. The fifth
environmental principle states that “Everything Must Go Somewhere”. This statement
for me is very general one. Fortunately, the study material discussed and specified that
something to be wastes. For every human activity the production of waste should be
considered. These activities are the things that all of us do in a daily basis. To sum the
whole principle up, everyone should practice the identification and specification of waste
produced. One must learn segregation in order to arrange or categorize waste for
convenient identification. These helps us in applying alternative options to minimize
waste by recycling. If such principle is ignored, mother nature will deliver upon us the
consequences brought by irresponsible actions. Such consequences are seen in the
news lately about record-breaking floods devouring whole cities because of the lack of
waste management. The third and last principle discussed during the meeting states
that “Ours Is a Finite Earth”. This principle is the thing that I strongly agree on. Humans
are very proficient in trashing there one and only home. All of us should learn to take
responsibility in our actions. All things within and on the planet are limited especially
resources. As the population and improvement in technology increased exponentially
for the past few years, we tend to require and acquire more and more resources from
the environment. It’s a good thing but before doing that, we should always consider the
effects we caused on the environment. Such example is the use of non-renewable fossil
fuels. In a subjective viewpoint, the use of fossil fuels is definitely cheaper and
convenient compared to the use of renewable energy. But the gasses emitted from the
combustion of such fuels will cause harm to the environment. The least we can all do is
support research and development for renewable energy and resources or urge the
government to switch from non-renewable to renewable resources.
