MODULE 2
The nature of Mathematics

Activity 1: LEFT OR RIGHT?

Consider the following conversation of Mr. Pandemic and Mrs. Covid.

Answer the questions that follow. GODBLESS YOU!
Mr. Pandemic : Turn Left!
Mrs. Covid : I didn’t hear you. Left?
Mr. Pandemic : Right!

1. What can you say about the conversation?

➢ The conversation above says about the different sides of every categories
which is, when Mr. Pandemic says “ Right” it means agreed for Mrs. Covid
what she heard. There are a lot of words that have the same structure of
words, but have different uses and meanings. So, between their
conversation there was a contradiction.

2. Can you give another example with the same idea as that of the given
conversation?

➢ Anna, place her bags on the right corner and take a rest for
tomorrow's vacation at her grandmother's place.

Activity 2: Where do I belong?

Instructions: Classify each card according to the following categories as indicated

on the table. Write your answer on the table. GODBLESS YOU!

MATHEMATICS ENGLISH

Follow-up Questions:
1. How did you get the answers on the above activity?

➢ By identifying and reading to understand each mathematical opponents.

2. How will you differentiate those terms/statements under English and

Mathematics along with its categories?

➢ As we check, every word has mathematical statements and meanings,

by correcting it right I use some networks who help me to
differentiate the statements.

Activity 3: L-S Translations!

Instruction: Answer the tests by following each of the given instructions.

GODBLESS YOU!

A. Translate each statement into symbolic notation. Let P represent “ I like

Pepsi” and let C represent “ I like Coke”.
1. “ I like Pepsi ” or “ I like Coke ”. _______P v C_________
2. “ I like Pepsi “ and “ I like Coke ”. ________P^C_________
3. I do not like Pepsi. ________~P__________
4. It is not the case that I like Pepsi or Coke. ______~(P v C)________
5. I like Pepsi and I don’t like Coke. ______P^(~C)________

B. Translate each symbolic notation into sentences. Let p represents “ Today is

Monday” and q represents “ The weather is good”.

1. ~p ⇨ “ Today is not Monday”

2. p^q ⇨ “ Today is Monday and the Weather is good.”
3. (~p)^q ⇨ “ Today is not Monday and the weather is good.”
4. pv(~q) ⇨ “ Today is not Monday and the weather is not good.”
5. ~(p^q) ⇨ “ Today is not Monday and the weather is not Good.”
C. Answer the following questions:
1. From your answers on Test A, what are your observations? How did it
help you?

➔ I once observed that both words and the given symbols have the
same meanings. Which can help me to know what the next
word to write as I followed the instructions.

2. From your answers on Test B, what are your observations? How did it
help you?

➔ Same as how I answered the Test A, but the difference is I just

make the symbols into words which can be readable.

Activity 4: Construct Me!

Instruction: Construct a truth table of [(p^q)v~p] → [(pvq)^~q].

p q ~p ~q p^q pvq [(p^q)v~p] [(p v q)^~q] [(p^q)v~p] → [(pvq)^~q]

Follow-up questions:
1. What can you say about your final results of the truth table?

➔ The final result stands for p which has a truth/positive result.

2. How will you apply this concept of activity in a real-life setting? What is its
value to you as a student?
➔ For me as a student, this activity may apply to me as an example who
will be taking this bachelor's degree. I will apply this one as a good
pattern which is to be positive and think wise.

FORMATION/ASSESSMENT

Activity 5: Level Up!

General Instruction: Answer the following tests. Follow the instructions for each
of the given subtests. GODBLESS YOU!

A.

★ Write the following in symbolic form using P, Q, and R for statements and
the symbols ↽, →, ^, ↔ , where:

P: Pres. Duterte is a good president.

Q: Government officials are corrupt.
R: People are happy.

★ Write your answer on the space provided.

1. If Pres. Duterte is a good president, so government officials are not
corrupt.

➢ P⇾(~Q)

2. If government officials are not corrupt, then the people are happy.

➢ ~Q⇾R

3. If Pres. Duterte is a good president and people are happy, so

government officials are not corrupt.

➢ (P^R)⇾ ~Q

4. Pres. Duterte is not a good president if and only if government

officials are corrupt and the people are not happy.

➢ ~P⇿(Q^~R)
5. Pres. Duterte is not a good president or the people are not happy.

➢ ~P v~R
B. Complete the truth table.

Q R Q⇾R QvR R^Q ⌐P ⌐(QVR) ⌐ (QVR)⇾(⌐R^⌐Q)

C. Enumerate and define the 3 characteristics of mathematical language.

1. PRECISE. The first characteristic of a mathematical language. Precision in
mathematics is like a culture of being correct all the time.
2. CONCISE. The second characteristic of a mathematical language. The
mathematician desires the simplest possible single exposition at the price of
additional terminology and machinery to allow all of the various particularities to
be subsumed into the exposition at the highest possible level.
3. POWERFUL. The third characteristics of a mathematical language. It is a way of
expressing complex thoughts with relative ease.

D. Cite an example that shows how mathematics is conventional.

★ Of course mathematics is conventional, is it because it can give you analysis

by using notation, names, symbols, and numbers. For example in the data
instead of writing a certain place, or genders, like instead of “ Male” they
were convinced to use “M” as symbols so that the data shouldn't be that
long.

E. What is the importance of logical operators or connectives in our daily

language?

★ A logical operator is a symbol or word used to connect two or more

expressions such that the value of the compound expression produced
depends only on that of the original expressions and on the meaning of the
operator. Common logical operators include AND, OR, and NOT.

F. What do you think is the relationship between propositional logic and

mathematical reasoning?
★ The rules of mathematical logic specify methods of reasoning
mathematical statements. ... Propositional Logic is concerned with
statements to which the truth values, “true” and “false”, can be assigned.
The purpose is to analyze these statements either individually or in a
composite manner.
