Introducing the artist

Julie Mehretu Is an American contemporary visual artist. She was born in Ethiopia in
1970 and left to the United States of America to escape, political violence. At a young
age she was interested in drawing and painting, she earned her undergraduate
degree in art at Kalamazoo College, Michigan. She spent her junior year at cheukh
anta Diop University, where she was inspired by local craftspeople. Following
graduation in 1992, she travelled to San Francisco, which was known, as a haven for
alternative, creative lifestyles. In San Francisco she began to paint every day.
Mehretu decided to continue her education in art and was awarded a full scholarship
from Rhode Island school of design.
In Rhode Island school of design (RISD) Mehretu was drawn to the slow and
deliberate process of etching, which is an intaglio printmaking process, where lines
are engraved using acid into a metal plate. Which included into her drawings and
paintings. She was also inspired by her teacher Michael young, who made a large
volume of drawings, where she was also inspired through her distinctive approach to
mark making which led to the use of dots, lines, symbols, and shapes. Mehretu
began exploring aerial views and using the areas of marks together to create
formations which resembles landscapes, she then used the technique with works
built up from several layers of drawing. After Graduating again at RISD she moved to
New York, where she opened a studio, she showed two of her artworks at exit art, a
non-profit cultural centre, many art dealers showed interest in her work. Her first
solo show in 2001, sold out before the opening, and now, her work has high demand,
she has also maintained a high profile for her pieces.
I find Mehretu’s work interesting because, of the layering, and the various coloured
lines, all over the piece of work. I think the Layering creates emphasis on some areas
of the work and creates a ‘serious and sad’ atmosphere because of the dark lines. In
this art piece, Mehretu used 2 main colours, black and blue. I like the work because
Mehretu used fascinating shapes that work nicely. Mehretu includes etching in her
work
In this piece of Mehretu’s work, she uses more colours together and makes them
more visible compared to the black lines. It gives a more imaginative theme
compared to the one before. She also included engraving and clear marks, different
shapes, e.g. A kite, this works well with the colours. I like this work because it’s more
joyful, and vibrant.
This work consists of more vertical tines to establish the look of buildings overlapping
each other, mehretu uses one colour, black and an overlay of white marks, and she
shades in some of the windows. Mehretu uses the same techniques, engraving. I
think the work is impressive, as they all must have taken a lot of time.
To improve my artist response, I decided to look at the genres Julie mehretu as
doing, such as Abstract Expressionism with pop art, this showed me some artists like
Jackson pollock who is a painter and was a major figure in the abstract expressionism
movement. Like mehretu, he also used blacker compared to the colour, shown in
number 1a, 1948. I also looked at Andy Warhol, whose style or art was pop art, the
colouring was almost like some of Mehretu’s work, and I could see where the ‘pop
art was shown in her work.’\
