The key takeaways are that active voice uses stronger verbs and puts more emphasis on the subject performing the action, while passive voice puts more emphasis on the subject receiving the action. Active voice is generally preferred in academic writing.

In active voice, the subject performs the action, while in passive voice the subject receives the action. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive sentence, and the verb 'to be' is used along with the past participle form of the main verb in passive sentences.

Verbs in active and passive voice can be applied when writing reports, articles, or instructions where the emphasis is sometimes placed on who/what does or receives the action. It can also be used in storytelling to vary sentence structures for interest.

the simple subject and “was parked” is the verb: the car was parked by the driver.”
In effect, the object of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive
sentence. Although both sentences have the same basic components, their
structure makes them different from each other. Active sentences are about what
people (or things) do, while passive sentences are about what happens to people
(or things).
D. Discussing new Voice refers to the form of a verb that indicates when a grammatical
concepts and practicing subject performs the action or is the receiver of the action. When a sentence is
new skills #1 written in the active voice, the subject performs the action; in the passive voice, the
subject receives the action. In academic writing, it is generally preferred to choose
an active verb and pair it with a subject that names the person or thing doing or
performing the action. Active verbs are stronger and usually more emphatic than
forms of the verb “be” or verbs in the passive voice.

E. Discussing new We can view the action of a sentence in two ways without changing the facts
concepts and practicing reported.
new skills #2 Example: Mary kissed John.

simply the property of the verb that show whether the subject acts (active voice) or
is acted upon (passive voice). A verb with a direct object is in the active voice. When
a direct object is converted into a subject, as in the examples above and below, the

subject of a passive verb does not act.
