Hello everyone! I am Teacher Ed, your science teacher for today. welcome to my class.

Today let us
learn and explore together.

Are you ready? (PAUSE, YES SOUND)

Alright!

In this video, you will learn how to interpret different hydrometeorological hazard maps.
So let’s get started

Take a look at this picture. Based from the picture, what are the common hydrometeorological
hazards in the Philippines?

Very Good! You are right!

The common hydrometeorological hazards in the Philippines are typhoon, thunderstorm, flashflood,
storm surge, el Niño and la Nina.

There you have it! You are all doing great! (YEHEY SOUND EFFECT)

Previously you have learned that Philippines is highly prone to hydrometeorological hazards these
includes typhoon, thunderstorm, flashflood, storm surge and drought which are considered as climate
and water related hazards and therefore lead to the importance of studying hydrometeorological
hazard map.

The question is how do we determine the vulnerability and susceptibility of the area or place?

These will lead you to our new lesson for today which is all about interpreting hydrometeorological
hazard maps.

Before we go further, Let us know first what is hydrometeorological hazard map?

Yes! That’s Right!

Hydrometeorological Hazard maps are visual representation of a specific location that highlights the
affected or vulnerable areas of a specific hazard

Now, let’s focus in interpreting hydrometeorological hazard maps.

Well. It’s not easy to interpret this kind of hazard map

But, Of course, it is going to be easy if you will bear with me as we explore this lesson. Here’s how!

First in interpreting, the hydrometeorological hazard map, you need to identify the parts of the map.

Take a look at this picture. Together let us, identify the following parts of the map:
Based from the illustration, what are the parts of the map?
Very good!
The parts of the map are Title of the map, Legend, Orientation Compass, and Coordinates
What is the title of the map?
You are right! The title of the map is Area that are highly risk to typhoon.
Now for the orientation of the compass, there are fourcardibnal directions such as
North, east, south and west.
Class, try to study the map, What are the different colors used to distinguish different areas in the
map?
All right ! The colors used to distinguish different areas in the map are Dark blue, sky blue, green,
yellow and dirty white. And these are what we call Legend.

What does each color mean regarding the susceptibility of an area for a specific hazard?

Alright very good! The color and its meaning regarding the susceptibility of an area for a specific
hazard are
Dark blue- Very High
Sky blue – High
Green- Medium
Yellow – Low
Dirty White- Very low

Now based from the picture given its legend. What are the areas in the map that are prone to
typhoon?
That’s correct!
Storms most frequently make landfall on the islands of Eastern Visayas, Bicol region, and
northern Luzon. they are most likely located at the eastern portion where typhoon originates.

Did you get it?

It’s time to sharpen your minds as you are going to do it by group. Now for your activity I will group
into 5 groups Each group will be given a hydrometeorological hazard map and
Identify as to what region your province/locality/community belong and how high is the risk of your
area.
Based from your activity….
1. Where are the areas of high susceptibility to El Niño ? What can you conclude regarding the
topography of such areas?

You are all doing great! Visayas and Mindanao are the areas mostly affected by El Nino.
Next , Where are the areas of high susceptibility to Strom surge? What can you conclude regarding
the topography of such areas?
Very good! Coastal areas in the central Visayas (Samar, Leyte, Iloilo, Palawan, Cebu, Negros, Bohol),
southern Luzon (Bicol, Quezon, Metro Manila, Bulacan), and northeastern Mindanao (Surigao) are the
most vulnerable to high storm surges. They are most likely located near the coast.

Alright and the last is .. Where are the areas of high susceptibility to projected rainfall and or La
Niña ? What can you conclude regarding the topography of such areas?
That’s right! The areas most at risk to projected rainfall changes are Central, South and Southeast
Luzon and Eastern Visayas
Based from your activity….. What is the purpose of using hazard map?
God Job! These maps are used to inform people about the risk and dangers they are exposed to
from natural disasters this will be the basis for precautionary measures to lessen the effect of the
hydrometeorological hazards.
Before we end our lesson for today, let me repeat our key concepts:
Take note of these!
To interpret the map, we need to identify first the Title of the map, second is the Legend, third is
the Orientation of the compass and Coordinates

The purpose of using hazard map is???????

God Job! These maps are used to inform people about the risk and dangers they are exposed to
from natural disasters this will be the basis for precautionary measures to lessen the effect of the
hydrometeorological hazards.
Knowing or interpreting a hazard map is important because???
That’s great! It is therefore essential to understand the nature of these hazards in order to prepare
and to mitigate disasters. This would include recognizing early signs of the hazard and knowing
measures to reduce its impacts.

Did you get it all correctly?

Wow! You are all amazing! Congratulations!

That’s all for today

Thank you for listening.
Once again… This is Teacher Rey.
Stay Safe everyone, Godbless. n
