Cooling Sea Water Service System

The document describes the cooling sea water service system on board ships. It consists of central coolers, main cooling pumps, diesel generator cooling pumps, and other components that work together to cool machinery by circulating sea water. Sea water is taken in through sea chests, passes through heat exchangers to cool fresh water, and is discharged back overboard. The system cools engines and generators and the diesel generator cooling system can also serve as an emergency backup.

COOLING SEA WATER SERVICE SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

Cooling water used on board ships in gotten from the sea; it is a very important

system in respect to supply of sea water for cooling down the fresh water used for

cooling down the temperatures of machineries.

The cooling sea water service system consist of the following components which

include central cooler, main cooling seawater pump, diesel generator sea water

cooling pump, MGPS, sea chest etc

COMPONENT OF THE SEA WATER COOLING SYSTEM AND FUNCTION

2 CENTRAL COOLERS: They are of plate type heat exchanger coolers used for

cooling down the temperature of the fresh water that is used for cooling down

machineries in other to maintain their normal working temperature.

DIESEL GENERATOR COOLER: It is a plate type heat exchanger dedicated for

cooling down the fresh water used for cooling down the diesel generators.

2 MAIN COOLING SEA WATER PUMPS: They are of vertical centrifugal type of

pump with a capacity of 650m3/h each. Their function is to provide sea water to

the central heat exchanger.

2 DIESEL GENERATOR SEA WATER COOLING PUMPS: They are of vertical

centrifugal type with capacity of 200m3/h each and their function is to provide sea

water for the DG heat exchanger and also for providing cooling water for the

central coolers in event or failure of the main sea water cooling pumps.
VACUM PUMP HEAT EXCHANGRS: tube type heat exchanger using sea water from

the main sea water cooling pump as a source of cooling.

HIGH/LOW SEA CHEST: Its function is to provide suction for the main sea water

cooling pump, DG sea water cooling pumps and other engine room pumps

MARINE GROWTH PROTECTION SYSTEM (MGPS): This system injects chemical into

the sea chests, which protects the system against fouling caused by sea water

organisms.

STRAINER: Traps solids and other materials from going into the system.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM

The main sea water cooling pumps takes suction from the sea chests and

discharges it to the central fresh water cooler. It also supplies sea water which is

used by the vacuum pump for cooling.

After the sea water has passed through the central cooler and the vacuum pump, it

is then discharged back into the sea.

The diesel generator cooling system is independent of the main cooling water

system because it has its own pumps which also takes suction from the sea chests

and discharges it through the diesel generator cooler before going overboard.

The diesel generator sea water cooling system is also used as an emergency cooling

water system in the event of failure of the main sea water cooling pumps.

The MGPS injects chemical into the sea chest used for protecting the sea water

cooling system against fouling caused by sea water borne organisms.
