PROBLEM SET #2 IN POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Instruction: On the frontal page of your problem set, write the letter of your choice for each item number.
On the succeeding pages, solve each item and show complete solution. Solutions must be a hand written,
though the problem could be encoded. Avoid erasures. Use letter/A4 size bond paper.

Problems:
1. A 60Hz short transmission line, having R=0.62 ohms per phase and L= 93.24 mH per phase, supplies

sending end voltage per phase.
a. 124.13kV b. 105.23kV
c. 115.13kV d. 129.04 kV
2. From problem #1, what is the voltage regulation of the transmission line?

c. 97% d. 99%
6. A 3 phase wye connected, 20MW load of power factor of 0.866 lagging is to be supplied by a
transmission line at 138kV. It is desired that the line losses not exceed 5% of the load. If the per
phase resistance of the line is 0.7 ohms, what is the maximum length of the line?
a. 50km b. 51km
c. 52km d. 53km
7. The per phase constants of a 345kV, 3 phase, 150km long transmission line are:
resistance=0.1ohm/km, inductance=1,1mH/km and capacitance=0.02 uF/km. the line supplies a
180MW load at 0.9 pf lagging. Using the nominal pi circuit, determine the sending end voltage.
