First Quarter: Convergent Plate Boundary

When two plates converge, one plate will subduct under the other due to differences in density. There are three types of convergent boundaries: 1) When two oceanic plates collide, the denser plate will subduct, forming a volcanic island arc on the surface. 2) When oceanic and continental plates collide, the denser oceanic plate will subduct, forming a trench on the oceanic side and mountains on the continental side. 3) When two continental plates collide, neither plate subducts and a mountain range is formed as the plates crumple together.

Brief Introduction
If two plates are moving towards each other, it forms a convergent plate boundary. A
denser plate tends to slide below the less dense plate in a process called subduction.
Convergent boundaries occur between oceanic-oceanic lithosphere, oceanic-continental
lithosphere, and continental-continental lithosphere. The collision may result in the formation
of mountains, trenches, occurrence of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other geological
events.
An oceanic-to-oceanic plate convergent boundary occurs when two oceanic plates
collide with one plate pushed under each other, forming a subduction zone. The denser
plate plunges into the mantle and melts under high temperature and pressure, forming
magma. The magma, which is less dense, rises and erupts from the sea floor, forming an
oceanic volcanic arc.

3
An oceanic to continental plate convergent boundary is a result of the collision of
oceanic crust with a continental crust. In this type of convergence, the thinner and denser
oceanic crust is subducted under the thicker and less dense continental crust. When the
edge of the oceanic crust reaches the mantle, it will melt forming magma, then the less
dense magma will rise reaching the crust once again and will cause volcanic activities and
occurrence of earthquakes. Mountains are also formed on the continental plate and trench
on the oceanic side.
In a continental-to-continental plate convergent boundary, there is no subduction
process, no trench, no volcano, and no island arc. Instead, a large group of tall mountains
are formed called mountain ranges. Because of this convergence, the Himalayas is formed.
It is the most visible product of plate tectonic.
