Activity # 2: Reflection
After reading the first lesson, make a reflection of 300 words or more about three (3) examples of
communication that you experience in your day to day life as a member of your family, as a student, and
as a member of the community.
Most of us assume that because we spent a lot of time with our spouse, other family members,
or close friends, our communication with them should be relatively easy and effortless. My
spouse, parents, siblings and best friend knows me very well, so he or she knows what I am
thinking and feeling, as well as what I mean. We are often surprised and annoyed when people
who are close to us misunderstand what we are talking about. I found out that communicating
with people we know very well is actually more difficult than communicating with people we
hardly know at all. Communication has a big role of every students just like now that there is a
pandemic and students will have online class so what they did is they communicate their
teacher through using cellphone or laptop as means of their communication. Communication to
the family can make a strong relationships and build foundation of listening and understanding.
In our community communication is very effective because we can’t interact people if we are
not a good communicator. Another example of communication is speaking in phone, Skype,
zoom, in face to face, chat session and telephone. Now I realized that communication has the
big role and impact of our life because without communication we cannot understand each
other . Communication cannot be underestimated. Effective communication to our family also
can open up thoughts and feelings with each other. For example in impromptu speaking we
need a good communication skills for us to give our audience the best performance for them to
get their attention. And of course though communication we can express our thoughts,
opinions and feelings to other people. And according to Peter Drucker “ The most important
thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.
Activity # 3
What do these quotes mean in relation to communication? Explain briefly in one paragraph.
1. “To speak and to speak well are two different things”- Ben Johnson
That means that it is evident that most of us speak much more than is necessary or
advisable. We all want to pontificate and air our opinions on a myriad of life issues, even
if we do not have the wisdom or knowledge in that particular area. It would do all of us
well to truly listen to what is being said and only add to the conversation if it will be
beneficial and encouraging to those with whom we are speaking. There is nothing
wrong or awkward to allow silence to permeate a conversation so that we can really
understand.
2. “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.”- Peter Drucker
This means that some people give us the other side of the story and see it from their
perspective so we can have to listen for opinion then select wisely. The quality of our
relationships depends on the quality of our communication and when it comes to sales for our
business and growing our business through referral marketing, so this is very important.
Listening is different from hearing. You may hear somebody, but not listening to him. Listening
takes attention with the intention to understand. The most important thing is to listen with
empathy. That is, you place yourself in the shoes of the other person. To lead one must hear
everything and from everywhere. Filter it absorb what is required.
3. “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say
something.”- Plato
This means that when we cultivate stillness in communication with others, we create
space. In that space there is breath, there is clarity and there is receptivity. When we
avoid stillness, we run ourselves of an opportunity to be in the present moment.
4. “There is only one rule for being a good talker – learn to listen.”- Christopher Morley
A good communicator is not just about being good in giving advices or words, it also includes
how the person receives the message and decide it before giving feedback. It means,
transmitting a good message or being a good talker relies on the way of listening
wholeheartedly and analyzing the message carefully. A speaker’s job is not just only to speak
but also to listen with all his ears.
