Instructions: Read the following scenario and answer ALL the questions which follow.
Mr. Right...?
1. “What could be causing Tamara to take so long to get here? This is exactly why I don’t like
group work”
“Calm down no Yanique!! I am sure she will get here soon. It’s not as if she hasn’t been
contributing to the group work and participating in the planning”. Shaniel’s response
registered her clear annoyance with Tamara.
“You can say anything, but to how things a run I have to reach my yard by certain hours.”
Shaniel didn’t get much of a chance to respond. They were both distracted by the soft
rumbling of the very imposing, shiny, black SUV that pulled up in front of the building.
Shaniel didn’t know what kind of vehicle it was but was sure that the blue and white emblem
on the front meant that it was expensive. She watched as Tamara jumped down from the
front passenger seat and glided into the classroom towards them as the SUV slowly pulled
away. A smile lit up her entire face.
2. “Ok. I’m here! Have you started working on the presentation?” she inquired cheerfully as she
set her bag on a nearby chair, reaching into it and carefully removing her MacBook pro as
she spoke. She seemed to be deliberately trying to avoid the questioning stares that she was
getting from her friends.
“Tamara, why you so happy? And how comes you always behaving like you don’t have any
money and you father driving big expensive SUV to drop you at school?” Yanique
questioned – always being the one to say what’s on her mind.
3. “Well hello to you too Yanique, and … if you must know, he’s not my father. He’s my
boyfriend” Tamara replied, deliberately fingering the keys on her computer as she spoke.
“Boyfriend!!” Yanique’s eyes, already big, looked like they were about to pop out of her
head. “But Tamara, that is not a boyfriend, that is big man, and is just last month you and
Marcus couldn’t get enough of each other. What happen to him? Is what kinda sketel
behaviour that? How yu a go so hard my girl!” she laughed out loud.
“It didn’t work out with me and Marcus. He just cannot satisfy my needs right now” she
responded.
“But why Yanique? What needs? I’ve known Marcus since Prep school and he is such a
kind and considerate guy. He even told me how happy he was that you were with him”
Shaniel’s voice registered her surprise.
“Marcus just not mature. I’m tired of constantly being forced to hang out with him and a bag
a noisy boys! Everything we do is a combo deal with them. Not even a movie we can go
watch by ourselves. Derrick is so cultured and refined. He is exposing me to the finer things
in life. I can’t get that from Marcus.”
4. “So Tamara, him not married? Him look like him could have children our age? You sure
you know what you doing?” was Shaniel’s concerned response.
“I know exactly what I’m doing. Derrick going to pay for me to go shopping in Miami next
month, and I don’t have to worry bout money again. Marcus couldn’t do anything for me
with his lunch money. I don’t really care if he is married. Good men are hard to find so
some of us goin have to share”
“Jesus Christ Tamara! Mi caan believe you really de with a big married man for him money!
Suppose him wife find out? Suppose she come up here come beat you for her husband?
Suppose you parents find out?” Yanique was laughing through her disbelief.
“Is not about the money. I am learning so much from Derrick, he’s a good mentor. And I am
not thinking about any of the negatives. I am just enjoying it. I can’t bother worry about
‘suppose’ ‘suppose’ suppose’. Derrick giving me new perspective on life.
“Leave the girl alone mek she live her life Shaniel, chimed Yanique. Is cause she good up
good up why the man interested and taking care of her. You no see that the man rich. Is only
broke pocket man killing woman over little bit of money. If I was in your position, hell … I
would be car shopping”
6. Shaniel couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “How could you say such a thing Yanique?
You are not a good friend, or you would never be encouraging her to be with a man that is
married and twice her age”
“Don’t listen to her Tamara’, Yanique said. ‘She have mother and father to take care of her.
She no know how life go”
