In your own words, state what “self” is for each of the following philosophers. After
doing so, explain how your concept of “self” is compatible with how they conceived of the
“self”.
1. SOCRATES
For him the meaning of “self” is knowledge is the key to a happy and meaningful life and he
believes that every man is dualistic and the person is composed of soul and body, the
concept of life for him is “know thyself”. The perspective of his “self” is compatible of me
because I also believe that having a knowledge will give you a strength to have a successful
life and having knowledge can make everything is easy and possible.
2. PLATO
He also believes that man is dual nature of body and soul. He added 3 components of the
soul, these are the rational, spirited and appetitive soul. The perspective of his “self” is
compatible of me because I have all the components soul that he said and a person is have
of what we called “conscience” that sometimes I feel when I guilty when I make a mistake
and I think this is the spirited soul that he talking about.
3. ARISTOTLE
He believes that the body and soul are not two separate elements but are one thing. The
perspective of his “self” is compatible of me because I also believe that the soul is simply
form of the body and is not capable of existing without the body.
4. ST. AUGUSTINE
He believes that the soul is united to the body so that the man may be entire complete.
The perspective of his “self” is compatible of me because sometimes when I think about
death, I believe that our body will stay or bound die on earth and our soul is directly on
heaven and live eternally with God.
5. DAVID HUME
He believes that self is nothing else but a bundle of impressions or experiences. The
perspective of his “self” is compatible of me because for me people is made up of emotions
and feelings because of this we are united but sometimes it can cause trouble.
6. EMMANUEL KANT
For him the meaning of “self” is seat of knowledge investment for all human persons.
The perspective of his “self” is compatible of me it’s true that mind organize the emotions
of person and can control the feelings of all human persons.
7 RENE DESCARTES
He believes that the body is like a machine that attached to our mind. The perspective of
his “self” is compatible of me because it’s true that minds commands our body to move
which is called “the thinking thing”.
For him the meaning of “self” is mind and body are so interconnected and cannot
be separated from one to another and all of his feelings and emotions are all in one.
The perspective of his “self” is compatible of me because it’s true that our feelings and
emotions are one because emotion and feelings can lead to our body to act, depends on
what are you feel.
