Atomic Theory Timeline

Atomic theory has evolved over time as scientists discovered more about the internal structure of atoms. Early Greek philosophers proposed that all matter is made of indivisible particles called atoms. In the early 1800s, John Dalton created the first atomic theory which stated that elements combine in specific whole number ratios. Later, J.J. Thomson discovered that atoms contain even smaller subatomic particles. Ernest Rutherford then discovered the nucleus at the center of atoms. Niels Bohr modified Rutherford's model by proposing that electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed energy levels. Modern atomic theory holds that atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons, with mass concentrated in the nucleus.

Atomic Theory
In the Leucippus of Miletus book entitled, 'The Greater World

System" the concept of atom was originated.

Together with his student, Democritus, they come up to the

five major points of atomic idea.

Democritus
4 6 0 B . C

He proposes the existence of atom.

He called it "atoma" in Greek

translation is "indivisible". He

pounded materials until he made

them into smaller and smaller parts.

John Dalton
1 8 0 3

He created the very first atomic theory.

He said that elements combines in

specific proportion to form compounds.

His model is the "Solid Sphere Model or

Bowling Ball Model"

J.J. Thomson
1 8 9 7

He showed that atoms was made even of

even smaller particles or the subatomic

particles. His model is the "Plum Pudding

Model or Raisin Bun Model"

Ernest Rutherford
1 9 1 2

He discovered the protons and

the nucleus. His Model is the

"Nuclear Model"

Niels Bohr
1 9 1 3

He discovered the energy levels. He

modified Rutherford's model, he proposed

that electrons move around the nucleus in

specific layer. His theory is the "Bohr Model

or the Planetary Model

Erwin Shrodinger
1 9 2 4

He developed the model called,

"Electro Cloud"

James Chadwick
1 9 3 2

He discovered neutrons.

Neutrons have no electrical

charge and have equal mass as

protons.

The Modern Theory of

Atom
Atoms are composed of three

subatomic particles: electron,

proton, and neutron. The mass of

the atom is concentrated in the

nucleus of an atom.
