Lesson 4. Mathematics as a Language

Highlights

A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language.

Is a mathematical communication system that allows mathematicians to convey

mathematical ideas in a variety of natural languages.

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each.

There are three distinguishing characteristics.

Precise – ability to distinguish between little details

Concise - able to communicate a lot of things in a short amount of time

Powerful – capable of expressing complicated ideas

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language?

There are eight parts of speech that can function from the simple math these are

verb, noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection.

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence

The examples of mathematical expression are subtracted, product and divided while
the example of mathematical sentence are 3+ 5= 8, 6 x 2 = 12, 35 – 10 =25. Where
the equal sign is the verb.

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set?

A set is similar to a collection. It's a place where objects are grouped together based
on a shared characteristic.

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following:
1. Union of A and B
2. Intersection of A and B
3. Complement of A
4. A – B
5. B – A
6. A x B

A = { 1, 2, 3, 4} B = {3, 4, 5}

1.) A U B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

2.) A ∩ B = { 3, 4}

3.) Ac = {1, 2, 6, 7}, {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}

4.) A – B= {1, 2}

5.) B – A= {5}

6.) A x B= {(1,3), (1,4) , (2,3) , (2,,4)}

C. What is a function?

It’s where a relation from the sets of inputs to outputs where each of the input and

outputs are related.

D. What are the ways of writing a function?

We can write a function in one of four ways: orally, mathematically, visually, or both.

as well as algebraically

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation?

A binary operation is a computation that combines two items to create a new one.

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.

In the binary operation, there are four qualities. Closure property is an operation on
a non-empty set, Associative property is an operation in which two or more
numbers are added in the groupings, Commutative property is an operation in
which changing the order does not affect the result, and Distributive property is an
operation in which two valid replacement rules are used.
