VOLLEYBALL

HANDBOOK
What is Volleyball?

 Volleyball, game played by two teams, usually of six players

on a side, in which the players use their hands to bat a ball
back and forth over a high net, trying to make the ball touch
the court within the opponents’ playing area before it can be
returned. To prevent this a player on the opposing team bats
the ball up and toward a teammate before it touches the court
surface—that teammate may then volley it back across the net
or bat it to a third teammate who volleys it across the net. A
team is allowed only three touches of the ball before it must be
returned over the net.

Court Dimensions
The game is played on a volleyball court 18 meters (59 feet) long and 9 meters
(29.5 feet) wide, divided into two 9 m × 9 m halves by a one-meter (40-inch)
wide net placed so that the top of the net is 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches)
above the center of the court for men's competition, and 2.24 meters (7 feet 4
1/8 inches) for women's competition (these heights are varied for veterans and
junior competitions).

Equipment

Net
Net is one meter long and 9.5 to 10 meter
wide. It is tied vertically above the center
line of the court to posts fixed at either
sides of the court, at a distance of one
meter from the sidelines. The center of
the net should lie 2.43 meter above the
ground for men and 2.24 meter for
women. At the sides the net may be
higher by a maximum of 2cm, however it
should be tied at the same height at both
the posts.
The court width is marked on the net
with a tape and a flexible antennae of
one meter extends from the tape marker
on both sides of the net. These markings
help the referee determine when the ball goes outside the court.

Ball
Volley ball a spherical ball of 65-67 cm circumference. It is
made of leather or any synthetic
material and weighs 260-280 g.
Volleyballs are available in
various colors, however for
international tournaments, FIVB
approved balls should only be
used.

Other Equipment

Players of a team are uniformly dressed in jerseys, shorts, socks

and sport shoes. Jerseys of each team has a different color.

Basic Skills in Volleyball

The six basic volleyball skills are passing, setting, spiking,
blocking, digging and serving.

Passing is often thought of as the most important skill in

volleyball. If you can't pass the serve, then you won't ever put
your team in a position to score a point.

The importance of serving is often undervalued. Many coaches

don't teach players to serve aggressive and use this opportunity
to give the team an advantage for scoring points.

Blocking is perhaps the least taught skill in volleyball. Players

can get away with poor blocking skills because not blocking
isn't going to hurt the team as much as being poor at executing
other skills in volleyball.

Digging is another skill that isn't focused on quite as much as

most skills in volleyball.

The setter position is considered to be the most important

position in volleyball. The setter basically runs the team offense.

Technical Skills
Technical skills are defined as “the specific procedures to move
one's body to perform the task that needs to be accomplished”
(Martens, Successful Coaching, p. 169). The proper execution of
the technical skills in volleyball is, obviously, crucial to
successful performance. Most coaches, even those with little
experience, know what the basic technical skills of volleyball
are: serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging.
But the ability to teach athletes how to perform those skills
usually develops only over a long period, as a coach gains
knowledge and experience.

Technical Skills
Mastery of the technical skills of volleyball is important, but athletes
must also learn the tactics of the game. Tactical skills are defined as
“the decisions and actions of players in the contest to gain an
advantage over the opposing team or players” (Martens, Successful
Coaching, p. 170). Basic volleyball resources might focus on the
technical skills of the game and may overlook the tactical aspects.
Coaches even omit tactical considerations from practice because they
focus so intently on teaching technical skills. For volleyball players to
develop better as overall players, they need to learn techniques and
tactics together. One way you can approach tactical skills is by
focusing on three critical aspects, “the tactical triangle”:*

Rules of the Game

 6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back
row

 Maximum of three hits per side

 Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is

not considered a hit)
 Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a
serve

 A ball hitting a boundary line is "in"

A ball is "out" if it hits...

an antennae,

the floor completely outside the court,

any of the net or cables outside the antennae,

the referee stand or pole,

the ceiling above a non-playable area

 It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a players

body

 It is illegal to catch, hold, or throw the ball

 If two or more players contact the ball at the same time, it
is considered one play and either player involved may
make the next contact (provided the next contact isn't the
teams 4th hit)

 A player can not block or attack a serve from on or inside

the 10 foot line

 After the serve, front line players may switch positions at

the net

 At higher competition, the officiating crew may be made

up of two refs, line judges, scorer, and an assistant scorer

How to Officiate a Volleyball Game

Volleyball officials have a number of different responsibilities,

and they must keep a watchful eye on every point for the
duration of the match. Two people form an officiating team for
each match, with one acting as the head referee who stands on
the referee stand, while the other is "down" referee assisting with
monitoring substitutions and plays at the net.
Learn the rules and the nuances of the game, and pass a
certification course to become a recognized referee. The United
States is broken up into a number of different member regions of
USA Volleyball, and each region is sanctioned to certify
referees. Referees typically have to pass written tests and receive
the approval from the USA Volleyball region chair and
commissioner to become certified.
Practice the hand signals and understand when to make them.
Referees need to know the signals for substitutions, illegal
contact and fault. They also need to know how to signal whether
the ball landed in or out of play. Officials are expected to make
the correct call in a convincing matter almost immediately after
each play ends.
Maintain order throughout the match.

Be in constant communication with your assistant referee and the

scorekeepers to make sure that both teams are following the rules
about substitutions and formations. Be open in communicating
with the captains for each team. Understand when is appropriate
to give a yellow card for a penalty or a red card for an expulsion.
Start the game by marking down the lineup and rotation for each
team, flipping a coin with the captains to see which team serves
first and signaling the game to begin by blowing your whistle.
