Name: Case Study On Organizational Efficiency
Mr. Jim Cruz is a new F & b Manager of A-1 Resort, reporting directly to the owner. In
his previous work as F&B Manager of a De luxe Hotel, he has made an outstanding
performance and hailed as top grosser in the outlet he handled. Customers were very
much impressed by the product quality and satisfactory customer service which he has
been able to maintain. With his good records, A-1 Resort pirated him and gave him
higher remunerations and benefits with the expectation that Jim will resolve their
operational Problems in food preparation, sales, and customer service.
After six months, his new boss expressed dissatisfaction and disappointment over Jim.
The owner remarked: He is probably competent. His staff loved and respected him, but
he has not done well to improve sales, Profit, and production. A lot of customers
complained and never Returned. His supervisors are not doing well under his
supervision and its very Disheartening.
Jim sees the situation differently. He has regrets for having transferred to his resort. He
has always believed in his capacity to do the job well, but he felt so bad having turned
out poor results despite all the hard and sincere work that he had done. He said: It’s all
worries and tensions that beset me. I wanted to do so much yet feel crippled and help
ness. Take my position as a manager, was told to increase sales and improved food
and customer service using my own strategy. I wanted to set up sales targets, budget
and control system but got no records to start with. Neither my boss is amenable to give
me access to financial data, saying its all confidential. I was expected to work out
miracles on my own initiative and effort. I and the rest of the supervisors don’t attend
meetings. It not a company tradition. I wanted to do something, yet everything will
depend on the owner who often contradicts my decisions. I got supervisors under me
who have not given formal training. They learned by experiments and trials doing hit
and miss basis. This company thinks it’s unnecessary expense to train people. It’s the
owner contention that they will learn on their own. I make my supervisors responsible
for results that are not good but complained that they are powerless since they have no
authority to run after erring staff. One of our workers refuses to take orders or follow
only instructions directly from Mario, one of the supervisors. So, Mario suspended him,
but he was only reprimanded for doing so by the personnel officer as the worker is a
relative of the owner. Mario rightfully protested. What am I Supposed to do? I am
supposed to be responsible, in charge and accountable. What is my authority over
people under my Unit?
My boss complains to me about high cost, but he never seems to make up his mind
exactly what is it that we are aiming for. So, our cost gets out of control before we even
know what they ought to be. I reported my problems to other managers but seems to be
of no help to me as far as cost control and quality are concerned. One manager thinks I
should have sorted out difficulties with the finance manager. I can’t spend my half day
dealing with problems that should have never happened if only everyone knew what
was expected from each one. What was my authority over people during My shift? I
really wanted to do a good job but don’t know how to make it under these
Circumstances.
