Plotting an ETP

Last Updated: 28th April 2013

Plotting an ETP

• Red Line

o NAT D manually plotted westerly route (Manchester to New York).

• Red Circles

o Route Waypoints

• Brown Circle

o Nil Wind ETP between EINN (Shannon) and CYYR (Goose Bay).

• Yellow Circle

o ETP with a westerly headwind between EINN and CYYR.

Example
Assume the wind is from the west with a headwind component of 30 knots. Enter the graph with a:

• Continuing wind component of -30 (continuing towards west = headwind = negative sign)

• Returning wind component of +30 (returning towards east = tailwind = positive sign)

• Intersection of two lines gives a value of approx +3.5

• Distance between EINN and CYYR is 1819 (as printed on the chart)

• 1% of 1819 is 18.19

• +3.5 x 18.19 = +63.66 or approx +64

• The product is +64 so ETP will be in the continuing direction.

• On the horizontal graduated brown line (printed on the chart), mark 64 towards the continuing (west) direction.

• From this point extend a line, perpendicular to the graduated brown line, so that it intersects the route.

• The point of intersection is the ETP with a headwind component of 30 knots.
