Constants and Variables

1. The lesson plan provides objectives and activities to teach students about constants, variables, and algebraic expressions. It includes drills, group work, and assessments to check understanding. 2. Key terms like constant, variable, term, expression, and their meanings are explained. Examples of expressions are given and students practice identifying their components. 3. A final assessment tests students' ability to determine constants and variables in expressions and evaluate expressions for given values. Homework assigns identifying coefficients in additional expressions.

A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. differentiate between constants and variables in a given algebraic expression; and
2. evaluate algebraic expressions for given values of the variables.

II. Subject Matter:

A.) Topic : Constants, Variables and Algebraic Expressions
B.) References: Math 7- Learners Module page 141-146
C.) Materials :cartolina, Manila paper, flash, pentel pen, chalk and chalkboard
D.) Value Focus: attentiveness and cooperation

III. Learning Activities:

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
Good Morning, class. Good Morning ma’am.
2. Prayer
Before we start our lesson, let us all stand for a

C. ACTIVITY
Now, group yourselves into two.
Each group will be given 5 minutes to answer the given
activity. The group who will finish first will be given
additional points.
Is it clear, class? Yes, ma’am.
Okay, you may now start answering. (The students answer the activity.

D. ANALYSIS
Using Table A as your basis, answer the following Of course, ma’am.
questions:
1. What did you do to determine the 2nd term for
rows d to f?
2. What did you do to determine the 2nd term for
row g?
3. How did you come up with your answer in row
h?
4. What is the relation between the 1st and 2nd
terms?

Using Table B, how do you understand those symbols

and expressions?

That’s right! Actually, the activity we performed is a

short introduction for our topic today which is the
constants, variables and algebraic expressions.
Are you all ready to listen?
Let’s proceed.

E. ABSTRACTION

Algebra comes from the Arabic word, al-jabr which

means restoration.
The Language of Algebra
The following are important terms to remember.
Constant – is a number on its own. For example, 1 or
18.
There were four terms, ma’am”
Variable – is a symbol, usually letters, which represent

a value or a number. For example, a or x.
The constant is -21 and the variables are m, n and p.
Term- a term is a constant or a variable or constants
and variables multiplied together. For example, 4, xy, or
8yz. The term’s number part is called the numerical
coefficient while the variables is called the literal

Expression – an algebraic expression is a group of

terms separated by the plus or minus sign. For example,

x-2 or 4x+2y-45.
Try to look at the expression 4m-8n+8p-21.
How many terms are there in this expression?
Correct! Can you name what are these terms?
What is its constant? Variable?

Very good!
So who can give me another example of an expression
then identify its number of terms, constant, and
variables?
That’s correct! Any question, class?
Do you understand?
Get ¼ intermediate pad paper and answer this.
F. ASSESSMENT

A. Determine the constant/s and the variable/s of

each of the following expression.
Given Variable(s) Constant
1. 4x²
2. 3y+7
3. m² + 3m - 5
4. 2s² - 3t + 1
5. 25k – 60k + 36

B. Evaluate the following expression when x = 3

and y = 1.
1. 3xy
2. –x – 4xy
3. 4x – 5y + 3

G. ASSIGNMENT
List 5 example of an algebraic expression then
determine the literal and numerical coefficient of each
term.
