II. Discussion
THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL
o The Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) has listed teaching as a profession hence,
teachers are professionals.
Professional Qualities
1. Mastery of the subject matter – the first
essential requisite of effective teaching.
The teacher must:
• Have a thorough grasp of the subject he
teaches
• must possess a wide range of knowledge
and information of the subject
• keep abreast and keep up with new trends
and development in his area
1. Understanding the learner – 2nd essential of
effective teaching is knowledge of the
nature of the learner. It is important that
the teacher must like the learner. A teacher
who has a genuine concern and sincere love
for children can virtually imbue them with
love of studying and learning. It is
important to be aware and understand the:
A. Basic principles of human growth
and development
B. Different levels of intellectual and
emotional maturity of the children
C. Learner’s interests, background, and
previous experiences which in
effect, can be used in motivating the
learners.
2. Understanding the principles and methods of teaching and skill in the use of strategies
and techniques for proper implementation. The teacher should be able to promote
learning effectively through:
• Knowing what to teach (subject matter) Knowing how to teach(method)
3. General understanding of other branches/field of knowledge – the teacher must keep
abreast with the explosion of knowledge and be able to show how his subject relates
with other areas of knowledge. A broad understanding of the arts, languages, literature,
philosophy, mathematics, physical science and culture is necessary.
4. Understanding and taking pride of teaching as a profession – the teacher must:
• Understand his task and the corresponding responsibility
• Value and uphold ethical professional relationships with other people at
all times
• Be aware of the importance of professional organizations for teachers
and be an active member
• Be aware of the need for keeping abreast with the demands, changes and
challenges in education through various in-service programs.
• Teachers’ personality must be natural and genuine, that is, devoid of pretenses and
artificiality. They must be consistent, true and authentic.
• The teachers, more than any other professional, are momentarily subjected to scrutiny
to the minutest detail and observation by those they associate with. Teachers are judged
more strictly than other professionals. The personality they project determines the
impressions they make upon students and colleagues. Their poise, bearing and manner
of dressing create a stunning and attractive appearance. Their facial expression
communicates a friendly and amiable disposition.
Polished Demeanor- refers to the more refined behavior, manner or appearance of the teacher
towards the students and other people.
• Untucked- While moving around teaching
all day, it is easy for your shirt to come
untucked. Reaching to write on the board
and other actions can cause this. It looks
very sloppy for part of your shirt to be
untucked and hanging out. Be sure to
check and make sure your shirt remains
tucked in.
• Matching- This one may sound obvious but
some people it isn’t. Your clothing should
always match. You cannot just pair any
color with another. Mixing different
patterns can also cause other disasters.
