Carbon black content apparatus is used for determining carbon content in polyethylene,
polypropylene and polybutylene plastics. The equipment is manufactured as per ASTM
D 1603, IS 4984 and IS 2530.
APPARATUS:
The equipment comes in a wooden packing. It includes following parts / accessories.
1. Quartz combustion tube ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 01 Qty.
2. Quartz combustion boat‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 01 Qty.
3. Two glass stoppers‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 01 Qty.
4. Rubber tube‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 03 Mtrs
5. Gas regulator with gauge ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐01 Qty.
6. Ceramic furnace ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 01 Qty.
7. Glass bottle ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 02 Qty.
8. Desiccator ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ 01 Qty.
9. Silica Gel ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ ½ Kg.
PROCEDURE:
1. Switch ON the ceramic furnace. Set the temperature on the controller at 500°C as
per the requirement.(Refer to the controller manual for the setting of the
temperature)
2. Place the combustion tube inside the furnace. Keep the clean combustion boat inside
the tube for 10 minutes.
3. Remove the boat and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes inside the desiccator.
4. Weight the boat nearest to 0.0001gm i.e W0. Immediately place 1gm + 0.1gm of
sample under test in the boat & quickly weight to the nearest 0.0001gm i.e. Wa.
5. Adjust the rate of nitrogen flow to 1.7 + 0.3 lpm. Keep the boat with the sample
inside the furnace column. Close the combustion tube with stopper & allow the
sample to heat for at least 15/20 minutes.
6. Switch “OFF” the heater & allow the temperature to come down below 400°C while
maintaining the flow of nitrogen. Remove the stopper, take out the boat & allow it to
cool for at least 30 minutes inside the desiccator. Then quickly reweight the boat
with sample to the nearest 0.0001gm i.e. Wb, which will be after burning in Nitrogen.
7. Now set the temperature at 650 °C and keep the boat with residue again inside the
furnace column and stop the nitrogen flow. Keep it at least 15 – 20 minutes. (This
procedure you can do in your muffle furnace also). Take out the boat & allow it to
cool for at least 30 minutes inside the desiccator. Note the weight of boat with
residue after burning in Air i.e. Wc.
CALCULATION:
Carbon Content (%) = (Wb – W0) – (Wc ‐W0) X 100
(Wa – W0)
Where,
¾ W0 = Mass of boat after heating in Air.
¾ Wa = Mass of boat + sample before burning in nitrogen.
¾ Wb = Mass of boat + sample after burning in nitrogen.
¾ Wc = Mass of boat + sample after burning in Air.
REPORT:
Report the following information:
a. Identity of the sample.
b. The individual results as calculated above.
c. The averages of the results as calculated above.
