Problem One
A three phase 150 kVA 2400:240 V 50 Hz distribution transformer is constructed by
connecting three single phase transformers in the YNd1 vector group as shown in
Fig.Pl below. The per phase equivalent circuit parameters on the high voltage side
are:
RI = 0.72 n, X/I = 0.92 n, R2 '= 0.70 n, X/ 2 '= 0.90 n
Rc = 308.49 n, and X m= 44.61 n
Calculate:
(a) The voltage regulation for the rated load with a power factor 0.8 leading,
(b) The primary circuit current and secondary terminal voltage if the primary
terminal voltage is 2400 V line to line, and the transformer is supplying the
full load of power factor 0.80 lagging, and
(c) The efficiency in (b).

Problem Two
A four pole three phase winding is excited by balanced three phase AC currents of 50
Hz. Although the winding distribution has been designed to minimize the spatial
harmonics, there remain some third and fifth spatial harmonics. The mmf of phase A
can be written as
Fo=(F; cosO+F3 cos30+F; cos50)COSlOt
Similar expressions can be written for phase B (replacing 0 by 0-1200 and OX by
ox-120°) and phase C (replacing Oby 0+1200 and OX by ox+12oo).
(a) Derive the expression for the resultant three phase mmf,
(b) Show that the fundamental and the 5th harmonic components are rotating;
(c) What are the angular velocity in rad/s and rotating direction of each harmonic
component of the mmf?

Problem Three
A 75 kW 250 V separately excited DC machine has the magnetization curve measured
at 1200 rev/min as tabulated below:
Ea (V) 230 240 250 260 270 280
Ir(A) 4.20 4.52 5.00 5.76 6.60 7.64
The armature circuit resistance, including brushes, is 0.025 n. The retarding torque
corresponding to the no load rotational (mainly core and mechanical) losses, is 15.92
Nm, and can be assumed constant independent of speed.

(a) Calculate the starting armature current and starting torque if the machine is
operated as a motor carrying a constant torque load of 500 Nm and supplied with
the rated armature voltage of 250 V and field current of 5 A.
(b) Calculate the final steady state speed for the motor in (a).
(c) When the motor runs at the operating point in (b), the field current is reduced to
4.5 A. Calculate the steady state speed and armature current if the motor is still
supplied with the rated armature voltage of 250 V and carrying the constant
torque load of 500 Nm.
(d) To limit the starting current so as to protect the motor, an ACmC rectifier with
continuously adjustable terminal voltage is employed as the armature power
supply. If the motor is carrying the constant torque load of 500 Nm and the field
current is fixed at 5 A, how should the armature voltage vary against the speed in
order to achieve the shortest starting time while maintaining the armature current
below 3 times the rated armature current (This is known as soft starting)?

Problem Four
Fig.P4 below illustrates schematically the per phase equivalent circuit model of a
round rotor synchronous machine operated as generator. Without ignoring the stator
winding resistance, Ra,
(a) Draw a phasor diagram (not to scale) corresponding to an electrical load of
lagging power factor;
(b) Derive an expression of the output power, Pout, versus the load angle (also known
as power angle), b;
(c) Sketch the curve of Pout versus b.

Problem Five
A company has multiple production lines containing a great number of induction
motors and other inductive loads, resulting in a low power factor. When the company
is operated at its full production capacity, the total power consumption is 2 MW and
the power factor 0.65 lagging. The grid power supply, however, requires the power
factor to be no less than 0.8 lagging. For power factor compensation, a 3 phase, star
connected, 4 pole, 6000 V (line-line), 50 Hz, round rotor synchronous machine is
operated as a motor at no load. The synchronous reactance of the machine is 15 Q per
phase, and the field current is 150 A DC when the stator open circuit terminal voltage
equals the rated voltage. Assume a linear open circuit characteristic and ignore the
stator winding resistance and all rotational power losses.
(a) Calculate the capacity in kVA of the synchronous machine required to achieve the
satisfactory power factor;
(b) Draw a phasor diagram (not to scale) for this condition of operation; and
(c) Calculate the corresponding field current.

Problem Six
A 3-phase, 4-pole, star connected, 415 V (line to line), 50 Hz, wound rotor induction
motor has the following per phase T equivalent circuit parameters:
RI = 0.60 n, R2 ' = 0.56 n, Xii = 1.40, X a ' = 1.35 n, and X m = 60.50 n
(Rc can be ignored)
The retarding torque due to the total of friction, windage and core losses may be
assumed to be 5 Nm, independent ofload and speed.
(a) Calculate the starting internal or electromagnetic torque and the corresponding
stator current;
(b) Calculate the maximum internal or electromagnetic torque and the corresponding
rotor speed;
(c) Sketch the torque/speed curve for 415 V (line to line), 50 Hz operation, using the
results of (a) and (b);
(d) If this induction machine is operated as a motor driving a constant torque load of
60 Nm, calculate the steady state speed, stator current, output power and
efficiency;
(e) If this induction machine is used as a generator driven at 1545 rev/min by a wind
turbine through a gearbox, calculate its output power and efficiency.

Problem Seven
A 4/2 switched reluctance motor is shown in Fig.P7. Its dimensions are:
R = 38.00 mm g = 0.25 mm D = 130 mm a= p= 60 0 = Tt/3 rad
and the phase windings are connected in series such that there are a total of N = 100
turns (50 turns per pole) in each phase winding. Assume the rotor and stator to be of
infinite magnetic permeability.
(a) Neglecting leakage and fringing fluxes, plot phase-1 inductance L(O) as a function
of rotor position B;
(b) Plot the torque, assuming (i) il = h and i2 = 0, and (ii) i l = 0 and i2 = h,
respectively;
(c) Calculate the total torque acting on the rotor when both windings are excited such
that i1 = h = 5 A and at 0= 45 0 ;
(d) Sketch a drive circuit for this motor.
