Score:
Estimate the mean score for all your responses. Studies using this instrument have
found mean results in the 4.0 to 6.1 range.
Interpretation:
This instrument taps your level of organizational commitment. That is, it assesses the
relative strength of your identification with and involvement in your organization. High
organizational commitment is characterized by a strong belief in and acceptance of your
organization's goals and values; a willingness to exert considerable effort on behalf of
your organization; and a strong desire to maintain membership in the organization.
What does high or low organizational commitment indicate? Studies show that
committed employees are less likely to leave their organization and are more likely to
have lower absenteeism rates. Of course, given the changing relationship between
employees and employers in the past 15 years, it would not be surprising to see your
score lower than the mean range cited. It's probably fair to say that today's employees,
as a group, are less committed to their employing organizations than their predecessors
of a generation ago. In fact, a high score today may suggest rigidity on your part and
inadequate planning of career options should your organization downsize as a result of
financial setbacks, efficiency moves, or merger with another firm.
