Flyover

A Flyover is a structure which connects two or more points which are already accessible and is really flying
over and/or across manmade structures viz., road, railway, building, street. [1]

A flyover is a structure which carries one road over the top of another road. [1]

An overpass (called a flyover in the UK and most Commonwealth countries) is a bridge, road, railway or
similar structure that crosses over another road or railway. An overpass and underpass together form a grade
separation. [1]

A flyover is a high-level overpass, built above main overpass lanes, or a bridge built over what had been an
at-grade intersection [2]

Traffic engineers usually refer to the latter as a grade separation. [2]

A flyover may also be an extra ramp added to an existing interchange, either replacing an existing cloverleaf
loop (or being built in place of one) with a higher, faster ramp that bears left. [2]

o Such a ramp may be built as a right or left exit.

Why flyover is needed ?
Transports play an important role in the development of a nation. [2]
India has a wide and heavy network of road transport which connects all the major cities. [2]

The Expressways, Cloverleaf, Bridges, Tunnels and Flyovers have make metros of India e

more sophisticated in nature. [2]

. To handle the heavy traffic and for uninterrupted connectivity the beautiful flyovers are
constructed in all the metro cities of India. [2]

All the flyovers have been constructed with new technologies with noise and dust barriers. [2]

As Population is increasing, there is a necessity of constructing flyover.

So we can divert the traffic in other way also.

Hence, traffic can be controlled by such kind of construction.

First flyover
The world's first railroad flyover was constructed in 1843 by the London
and Croydon Railway at
Norwood Junction railway station to carry its atmospheric railway vehicles over the Brighton
Main Line.[4]

The world's longest flyover

from Darsait to Qurum-Muscat city

[4]
India's longest flyover with a length of 11.66 km was dedicated to the nation by Andhra
Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah amid controversy over its naming after former Prime Minister P V
Narasimha Rao with a Congress ally and powerful political group Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen boycotting

the inaugural function. [3] The flyover was built

over a period of about three years at a cost of Rs 600 corer (Rs 6 billion), using the latest technology of
prefabricated segment and overhead grid launcher, causing minimal disruption to the traffic along the
route. [3]

 Delhi and Chennai has maximum number of flyover in India and also known as “The city of flyovers”.
[2] Jaipur,Lucknow and Guwahati also has best flyovers to minimize the traffic of the city. [2]
 Flyovers in Mumbai: Mumbai known as “The City Never Sleep” has 44 existing flyovers and
16 new flyovers has already been proposed to come to reduce traffic at different location of the dream
city.
These flyovers provide at least some relief to the Mumbaikers. One of the best flyover in Mumbai is
thane flyover.
Mumbai also has one of the best bridge in India that is bandra-worli sea-link. [2]

[2]
Flyover in Bangalore: Bangalore The ‘Garden city of India‘ has some of the great flyovers.
Bangalore electronic city flyover is 2nd biggest flyover in India.
Hebbal Flyover is the best one and double road flyover is one of the worst flyover in India, has a
signal on it, first of its kind in the world. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Hyderabad: The twins cities Hyderabad and Secunderabad has recently registered
its name in the book of records for having the longest flyover in the nation.
It is 11.6 km long and India’s longest flyover and the road will be the India’s longest expressway. [2]

[2]
Flyover in Surat: Flyover in Surat have been a great success story in decongesting traffic
movement.
Varachha flyover was the longest flyover in India. [2]

[2]
Flyover in Delhi: The Capital city of India, Delhi is using State-of-the-art technologies for its flyover
projects to minimize construction activity at busy intersections.
Commonwealth Games traveler will remember Delhi as the green city of beautiful flyovers. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Kolkata: APC Road & AJC Bose road taken together is the longest road in Kolkata.
AJC Bose road flyover is 1.8 km in length and one of the most important and longest flyover in
Kolkata. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Chennai: Chennai is also known as “The city of flyovers”.
It has maximum number of flyovers in India; few of them are Anna Flyover, Chennai Airport Flyover
and Lucas Flyover.
The famous and grand flyover “kathipara Junction” a cloverleaf shaped flyover is new face of Chennai. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad is one of the beautiful city in Gujarat, it is ready to fly
over those congested city roads.
After Ahmadabad being developed as science city, its main focus is to improve its infrastructure. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Patna: Flyovers in Patna are very helpful to reduce the surging traffic pressure on its
boring road. Patna is one of the great city in Bihar and  one of the oldest living city in India. Mahatma
Gandhi Setu on river gange is the longest river bridge in India. [2]

[2]
Flyovers in Pune: Pune, one of the famous city for its greenery, natural beauty, surrounded
mountains and for romantic weather.
Pune the green city has good diversions to handle the traffic and University circle flyover is the best
example.
University flyover is the longest and best flyover in pune. [2]

 PILECAP: Pile cap is provided on all the pile to transfer the uniformly to the pile. This may be sact in
situ.

 PIER: They are intermediate support of superstructure. Normally they are required to withstand high
vertical loads and large lateral loads.

 PIER CAP: The top of the pier provides the intermediate bearing surface for the support of the
superstructure. It distributes the loads from the bearings to the pier uniformly.

 PEDESTAL: It is provided at the top of the pier cap to transfer the load more uniformly. It is
considered as base support of the bearing.

 BEARING: It is provided at the top of the pedestal to transfer the loads more uniformly.

 EXPANSION JOINT: It is provided between two clear spans.
