Listening to reports. How can critical listening be helpful in drawing information

from reports?
When we attend a speaking event, we are usually there to hear the speaker's
message. Specifically, we are there because the message has meaning to us. This
can be a lecture delivered by your favorite professor or a motivational speech by a
famous public speaker. In any event, we listen intently and try to absorb as much
of what is being said as possible. But, how do we know what we are hearing is
actually true?
That's difficult to discern, but what we can do is take a few careful steps to
better evaluate information we receive. This is critical thinking, and it involves
analyzing the speaker's message and motives to assess the message for
authenticity and truth. There are a few ways to do this. You can analyze the
speaking situation, or the context in which the message is being sent.

Listening to opinion. Why do you think is critical listening is necessary when

listening to the opinion of others?
Because, as we listen to the opinion of other people, we do not just listen but
sometimes tend to give feedback.
They may just be opinion but they can be the start of misunderstanding. So
paying attention will prevent it.

Listening to campaigns. What role does critical listening play in the

decisionmaking of the public when watcing or listening online campaigns?
First of all, few people make rational decisions based on complete and
objective information; second, few people are interested enough in truth to
expend the necessary energy and time to ascertain it; third, few people listen very
well, online or elsewhere.
But, basically, your question, in my opinion, is really about Critical Thinking.
Critical listening cannot and will not occur in the absence of Critical Thinking,
which requires effort and inclination, and most likely some training, or at least
critical reading … with intent to understand, apply, and reflect.

Generaliz
ation. Cite five real-life Situations when critical listening is required.
Briefly exp lain only.
1. Practice active listening: During a group discussion, give undivided
attention to the speaker and don’t play with your writing material or look at the
panel instead. Don’t let your mind wander to your list of points and how you want
to put them across. When you are listening, just focus on that. You should be able
to do this with a little practice.
2. Respond to the speaker: In a GD, make sure that your body language
is positive and your facial expressions show your interest in what is being said.
You can convey comprehension by beginning with a comment like, “I appreciate
your point and agree that…”
3. Suspend judgement: Make sure that you listen to the speaker till the
end and not give in to your preconceived notions. Don’t shut yourself to others’
views and be open to what they have to say.
4. Listen well to speak well: In a discussion, you will be better equipped
to make a valuable contribution when you listen carefully and know when to
speak. You can demonstrate your listening skills by placing your point in the
context of what was said just before you. For instance, “I understand my friend is
not quite happy with the new law, but I feel the good part is…”. If you do not listen
properly and are in a hurry to just blurt out your point, you will only sound
disjointed and make no sense in the context.
5. Internal barriers: Ego, insecurity, close-mindedness, restlessness – a
whole range of emotions can be barriers to effective listening in a work
environment. Speaking is considered to be a more productive activity than
listening. We are insecure about having to stay quiet and listen. It feels like we
aren’t contributing constructively.

Application. How relevant is critical listening to the time when fake news is going
around social-media?
Always corroborate everything! Whether it's a news story, social media post,
a speech, anything. Thanks to the internet we have amazing access to almost all of
the information in the world, but not all of it is good information. And it’s our job
to distinguish the truth from the lies.”
If you see a news story that seems a little unbelievable, that’s probably
because it is. The first thing you should do is check serious news outlets
(Associated Press, Reuters, Politico) and see whether they are reporting the story.
Don’t just find one source that makes the story look credible, find multiple. And if
you can’t don’t share the story with anyone, because then you’re just helping
spread fake news.”

Course Packet Discussion Forum
How do you spot fake news.? What are the hints that an information material
contains fabricated messages?
Fake news is nothing new. But bogus stories can reach more people more quickly
via social media than what good old-fashioned viral emails could accomplish in
years past.
Concern about the phenomenon led Facebook and Google to announce that they’ll
crack down on fake news sites, restricting their ability to garner ad revenue.

Perhaps th
at could dissipate the amount of malarkey online, though news
consumers themselves are the best defense against the spread of misinformation.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for students and other segments of the

population to know how to identify fake news. A typical example of where fake
news originates is a bogus website that looks similar to an actual news outlet, but
was created by an individual or organization, often operating outside the U.S., to
promote a particular opinion or political philosophy. The entity publishes articles
on the site that contain false information in an attempt to attack opponents and
promote their views in the guise of news reporting. The articles are shared among
targeted users on social media as a way to spread the misinformation. This form
of fake news is usually intended to achieve a political goal, such as discrediting a
certain candidate or legislator or to weaken support for a particular side of a
contentious issue. Alternatively, creators of fake news may spread
misinformation to foment unrest and divisiveness among people, or simply to be
malicious.
It’s easy to see why fake news is a problem, but it’s harder to identify it and
prevent it from spreading. Many social media users, including journalists and
politicians, are aware of problems regarding fake news, yet they unknowingly
give it credence by sharing misleading, incorrect, and downright fabricated
“news” on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.
As students progress in their education and begin their professional careers, they
need to be able to distinguish bogus news stories from true, fact-checked
journalism. These tips help teach students how to identify fake news to ensure
the news they read and view is verified and accurate. Being able to spot
misinformation disguised as legitimate news will enable students to combat the
widespread distribution of harmful, misleading, and false information.

How should fake news be handled?

You likely feel that you’re not susceptible to misinformation, which makes sense
—misinformation exists because those who believe it don’t think it’s
misinformation. Try a few of these tasks to check your biases and blindspots.

Online class vs. traditional class
Class Flexibility is one of the obvious benefits of online classes is the level of flexibility you get.
You can continue working, running the household, and take classes all at once. While online
students receive deadlines, there is more flexibility around what their day — they can choose
when will study, complete assignments, listen to lectures, and more.
With a traditional class format, there is often a lack of flexibility. You must attend your classes in
person, meaning there is usually a commute and strict scheduling involved. However, there are
still flexible class options out there. If you prefer to take classes on-campus, you can find a
school that will allow you to create a customized schedule that works around your needs.
